It is known in Venezuela as ’Nuez de Barinas, nuez or nogal de Barquisimeto’ and in other countries as ’inchi’, ’taque’, ’abay’ or ’palo de nuez’. The oil extracted from the ’nuts’ (seeds) is edible. The objective of this study was to assess the potential use of the oil extracted from the seeds in cosmetics. The organoleptic characteristics, some physical (viscosity, specific density, extensibility, UV absorbance), and chemical (fatty acid profile, titratable acidity, saponification index, unsaponifiable matter and peroxide value) characteristics, were determined by official methods. The results show a high polyunsaturated fatty acid content (75.13%) and good physical, chemical and toxicological characteristics appropriate for use in cosmetics. It was concluded that the Caryodendron oil should be useful in cosmetic formulations. An experimentally based melting model, solids conveying model, and new improved metering model, were combined to develop this formulation. The procedure for global design of a flood feed intermeshing counter-rotating twin screw extruder is presented. Illustrative calculations are made for polyvinyl chloride and high density polyethylene in this type of machines with different screw designs. Computations are made for axial variation of the fill factor, pressure, temperature and melting profiles. Simulations were found to match with experimental results well. The model was also applied to scale-up. The 1:1 stability constants obtained by this method were in reasonable agreement with the corresponding values in the literature. In addition, the release profiles of fragrance materials from 2HP-?-CyD aqueous solution were investigated using the dynamic head-space method. It was found that the suppression of the fragrance materials release was dependent on their stability constants. During extrusion, materials in the extruder are plasticized and conveyed by positive conveying and suppressed by normal stress. A mathematical model of the pumping capacity of polymer solids in the vane extruder is established based on its structure and conveying mechanism. The minimum bulk density under atmospheric pressure and leakage coefficient in this model are obtained experimentally. Four general polymer materials are chosen to investigate the pumping conveying capacity of polymer solids in the vane extruder. The experimental results of the first vane plasticization unit show that the pumping conveying capacity increases almost linearly with the rotor velocity and is only slightly influenced by the material properties. Furthermore, the leakage coefficient increases when the temperature and velocity in the vane extrusion process are set inappropriately ; this reduces the pumping conveying capacity of polymer solids in the vane extruder.
