Their phenomenon, composition, mechanism of intumescence are reviewed, followed by a discussion of the use of thermal analysis to investigate the mechanism of decomposition of intumescent coating. A brief review of types of fire retardant coatings is discussed. Also requirements of building regulations, char properties of intumescent coatings, evaluation and Fire Test Standards are presented. Intumescent coating systems with various types of intumes cent coatings and finally applications with off-site advantages is given. Note de contenu : - TYPES OF FIRE RETARDANT COATINGS

Initially, intumescent systems could provide only half hour protection and could be used only in dry internal locations. It is now possible to obtain intumescent systems that can provide up to two hours fire resistance to steelwork in exposed external locations. In order to function correctly, in the event of a fire, intumescent systems have to be correctly specified, applied and maintained.
Intumescent fire protection has several advantages over concrete, boards and non intumescent sprays. For example :
- It provides thin-film fire protection. This enables architects to express the steelwork in their designs. Normally intumescent coatings are applied at between 0.3 and 3 mm thickness so that the character of the steelwork is preserved. This allows intumescent systems to act as decorative as well as protective coatings.
- They are light weight and do not add significantly to the load on the steel structure.
- They are relatively easy to apply and by the same application equipment as used for heavy-duty coatings.Note de contenu : - Specification
