Aldehyde tanning agents are widely used in leather manufacture, but their penetration and reaction in leather cannot be detected easily. Considering the fact that aldehyde can form a fluorescent Schiff base with amino groups of collagen, we visualized the distribution and reactivity of typical aldehyde tanning agents in leather during tanning process using a fluorescence microscope. The results showed that glutaraldehyde in leather was easily observed under the fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) filter system. The fluorescence intensity of pelt/leather gradually increased with penetrating of glutaraldehyde, basifying and heating, which was consistent with the formation of Schiff base and the increase in Ts of pelt/leather. Oxidized sodium alginate and dialdehyde sodium carboxymethyl cellulose in leathers were also detected using a fluorescence microscope because the aldehyde group of the two tanning agents formed a fluorescent Schiff base with amino groups of collagen. The oxazolidine tanned leather and the tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium tanned leather emitted little fluorescence because they crosslinked collagen with hydroxymethyl group. These results indicate the fluorescent technique is useful to visualize the penetration and reaction of aldehyde tanning agents that crosslink collagen with aldehyde groups. Tannage Résumé : One of the aims of the leather industry is the development of washable leathers that require little special attention. The term "washable leather", as used here, means a leather that can be immersed in warm to moderately hot water and washed with soap or detergent in a manner, for example, as recommended for woolen fabrics. Such leather could compete more readily with substitutes in many ways but especially in low maintenance cost. Note de contenu : - Garment type leathers

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : This work deals with the synthesis of water-based anionic sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde condensate (SMFC) with very low free formaldehyde content by sequential formulation. The structure of the oligomeric SMFC has been confirmed using spectroscopic methods like FTIR and UV. Molecular weight of the condensates was determined by Gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These oligomers were then evaluated as retanning agents. Chrome tanned wet blue leathers were treated with SMFC in different proportions (1, 2 and 3% based on shaved weight) to optimize the use of the product for physical properties of leather including fullness and dye uptake. Further, the leathers were subjected to conventional dyeing and fatliquoring processes. Control experiments without SMFC were also undertaken to judge the efficacy of the product. The results showed that SMFC treated leather exhibited improved grain tightness, softness, fullness and dye uptake in the resultant leather. The most important aspect of the product was very low (<10 ppm) free formaldehyde content in the treated leather.
Tannage Résumé : Three commercial grades of calcium carbonate and two commercial grades of magnesium oxide have been compared as basifying agents in chrome tannage. Either compound is a suitable reagent, but magnesia of reduced reactivity gives a smoother pH profile. Rates of reaction depend on the physical characteristics of the compound and grades must be selected for reaction rate with respect to the allowed tanning period.
