Leon, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 1-8 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : In order to obtain starch free tanning extracts from canaigre roots, several experiments were conducted at the laboratory level. The results of these experiments were utilized to design the process at the pilot plant level.
The tanning extract yield in the laboratory test was 50% containing 70% of tannins. The process used at the laboratory level was also used at the pilot plant level obtaining maximum yields of 47% of extract.
In the experimental trials run in the pilot plant it was found that the temperature has a very important effect on the extraction as well as on the quality of the extracts.
The other two variables tested, residence time and solvents to solids ratio, did not show any significant effect on the results of the extraction at the experimental levels tested.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9243

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Our work on the vertical fibre hide condition in Hereford cattle (1,2) has indicated that this condition is not controlled by genes at a number of separately segregating loci but is due to the presence, in a homozygous state, of either an autosomal recessive gene or a number of genes at tightly linked loci. As a result of this finding, we have examined the effect of various breeding programs on the frequency of the vertical fibre hide condition in a herd over a period of ten generations to determine if this is a practical method of reducing the incidence of the condition.
The selection programms considered for this purpose were:
1) the removal of all affected animals from the herd,
2) the removal of all affected sires only,
3) the use of known homozygous normal sires.
In the work described below, animals which show the condition, determined using techniques described previously (3), are considered to be homozygous, while those which are not affected are either heterozygous (carriers) or are homozygous normal (i.e having one or no gene for vertical fibre, respectively).Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9246

The main disadvantage of the lime-sulfide unhairing system is the disposal of sulfide wastes.
Since environmental considerations have greatly altered the cost effectiveness of conventional lime-sulfide processes, an investigation was made of the practicality of alternate chemical systems.
The systems employed lime, caustic soda, reducing agents, and protein dispersants.
A number of unhairing systems resulted in hair loosening that could be satisfactory for hair saving systems. Of the systems studied, only sodium borohydride resulted in hair destruction.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9247

Titre : Laboratory techniques for estimating the design and performance characteristics of pressure filters Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Christian Davies-Venn, Auteur ; J. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Laboratory procedures and mathematical models routinely used for sizing vacuum filters were evaluated and modified to permit their use in sizing pressure filters for sludge dewatering. The results obtained on a tannery sludge gave a linear relationship between predicted and observed filter yields for a bench-scale pressure filter.
A modified mathematical model was developed for calculating the filter yield and for sizing full-scale pressure filters based on laboratory studies. These same laboratory procedures can also be used determining the optimum chemical conditioning required for obtaining the maximum sludge dewatering capability from an operating pressure filter.
Some of the more important filtration variables which affect the performance of pressure filters were investigated statistically. It was found that the specific resistance and the suspended solids content of the sludge were the most significant. The pressure filter cake solids content (dryness) varied directly with the pressing time per unit of cake thickness while the filter yield in pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filter area was inversely proportional to the dryness (cake solid content) of the filter cake. These observations stem from the fact that increased pressing time removed additional water from the weight of sludge solids in the filter chamber.

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The purposes of this study were to determine the ability of an activated sludge system to treat wastewater containing Para-Nitrophenol, (PNP), and to evaluate the effect of a commercially available “bioaugmentation product” on the performance of an activated sludge unit treating wastewater containing PNP.
The activated sludge system was simulated using two-liter operated reactors seeded from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Various experimental comparisons were made on units exposed to PNP, not exposed to PNP, and units exposed to PNP while undergoing bioaugmentation.
Results show that the batch activated sludge units were able to adapt to and degrade PNP up to concentrations of 113 mg/l in the mixed liquor. The presence of PNP interfered slightly with the performance of the batch units in terms of solids production, effluent suspended solids, and sludge volume index.
The results of this study also indicate that the addition of the bioaugmentation product improved batch activated sludge operation in terms of PNP degradation, COD reduction, effluent suspended solids, and solids production. A similar improvement in PNP degradation was obtained by the addition of small amounts of fresh activated sludge microorganisms from a municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tanning waste can be treated effectively on a laboratory scale by a combination of an anaerobic contact reactor followed by a complete-mix aerobic reactor. The 28.7 liter anaerobic reactor is constantly stirred and maintened at 37°C. A settling tank follows to permit sludge recycling. The aerobic reactor contains 22.6 liters of microorganisms, which are suspended by the flow of air. Waste aerobic sludge is recycled back to the anaerobic reactor for digestion.
With a hydraulic retention time of 58 hr. and a loading of 2.5-5.0 g TCOD/day, an average TCDO removal of 90 percent was obtained (corrected for S). The anaerobes produced an average of 0.161 liters CH4/g TCOD removed. The CH4 can potentially be recovered and used to maintain the temperature of the anaerobic reactor.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9250

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Age-related changes in the ultrastructure of bovine corium were examined using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The micrographs of fetal corium and calf corium reveal a rather loose arrangement of fibers and fiber bundles with considerable matrix spacing. This is in contrast with that of 18-month and 40-month samples which show massive, tightly-packed fiber bundles and increasing diameter of the fibrils. These results are reviewed in light of existing knowledge which has established that, with advancing age, collagen becomes increasingly more resistant to both mechanical and chemical degradation. Tannage Résumé : Production of semi-processed vegetable tanned skins of the E.I. type has reached a high stage of perfection in the Orient. Leather of this type is conveniently processed further into various types of finished leather, particularly the semi-chrome type.
The basic method for production of semi-chrome leather from East India (E.I.) tanned leathers is to strip the vegetable tanned skin with a mild base and a degreasing agent, then chrome tan after souring with acid to bring down the pH and to remove iron stains. These leathers are processed further, i.e. dyed, fatliquored, retanned with a replacement syntan and/or vegetable tanning, depending upon the shade and characteristics needed in the final leathers.
The chrome tanning step, conventionally followed in the production of semi-chrome leathers, involved the application of 10 to 20 percent basic chromium sulphate, preferably in two feeds. The second feed may be a prebasified type or self basifying type of chrome tan. The higher basicity of the second retan aids in the increased fixation of chrome. Despite this type of approach, the chrome content of semi-chrome leather is low, less than 2.5 percent Cr2O3 on a moisture free basis.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9254

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A method for processing fresh butcher-hogskins to leather is described. The procedure followed was essentially a process that was developed on brined skins and described in a previous publication, with modification. Sodium hydroxide (0.25 percent) was added in the relime step and a nonioinic surfactant (0.5 percent) was added in the delime and bate step. The blue stock was then split, shaved, degreased, vegetable retanned and fat liquored. By following the procedures described, an acceptable leather with a clear grain and no grease stains was obtained. Either the added alkali or the added surfactant alone, also gave acceptable leather, but the use of both appeared to result in the cleanest grain.
The study demonstrates that the pigskin process developed earlier at this Center on brined skins which uses short floats, lowered amounts of water and chemicals and shortened process time can be modified to handle fresh butcherhogskins. The importance of using fresh pigskins is that it gives additional significant savings of water and handling time when compared to the use of salt cured stock. It also provides the opportunity to maximize by-product recovery and to eliminate the dissolved solids pollution resulting from salt curing at the curing plant and tannery.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9319

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Reinoculation of a range of microbial isolates showed fungal attack to be the reason for the deterioration of some boots with polyester polyurethane (PU) poromeric uppers. Bacteria were not implicated although they had grown along nylon fibers in the poromeric.
Flaking of the top coating of the PU foam layer resulted from surface growth, whereas deep cracking, a slower expression of fungal attack, was caused by growth from underneath the foam layer. Peeling of the surface coating was produced by two Fusarium spp but not by Alternaria alternate. Cracks were colorless to pinkish light grey with the two Fusarium spp and dark greenish grey with A. alternate. Similar discolorations were produced in polyether PU poromeric where fungi grew beneath the PU coating (without further deterioration) to form “blooms”.
The results of experiments were mold growth was kept separate from substrate indicated that exoenzymes were responsible for polyester PU deterioration.

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen confers to connective tissues their main properties :
- A large contribution to mechanical behaviour,
- Activation of the coagulation of blood,
- Role in cellular growth.
These three properties, added to two other characteristics, biocompability and biodegradability, have led researchers to imagine biomaterials constituted principally of this protein.
The preparation of collagen biomaterials necessitates the analysis of the protein which should be carried out on four levels :
- Chemical composition,
- Molecular size,
- Structure,
- Mechanical properties.
Our research center has been working for ten years in the field of collagen biomaterials and has developed some products such as : collagen solutions for the cosmetic industry and for artificial skins, films, tubes, haemostatic sponge and flour for surgery, biodegradable threads, collagens of various types for cell culture, films as supports for enzymes or other macromolecules. Several patents have been obtained. Some products manufactured by a new company are on the market, others are at an experimental stage.
For these applications, collagen seems to have a promising future.

In recent years, due to increased economic and environmental demands, the interest in all types of roll coater applications has been growing. Recent examples include application of waterbased acrylic adhesives and industrial coating of metal sheeting (slides or photos).
In the leather industry roll coaters have become more widely used since the late sixties utilizing precision and gravure applicators to apply stain coats, impregnations, effect coats, and solvent nitrocellulose topcoats. Today, reverse roll coat machines can apply water-based season coats on split, full and corrected grain substrates and application of aqueous topcoat finishes are possible by utilizing the precision coating technique.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9361
