ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fine zinc powder was recommended for use in paints as long ago as 1840. But it is only in the past 50 years, with the development of zinc-rich paints based on synthetic and inorganic paint resins, that zinc powder has become commonly used, specifically in paints for heavy-duty corrosion protection.
The main applications for coatings containing zinc are the long-term corrosion protection of industrial and marine constructions (such as steel infrastructure, pipelines, bridges, windmills, and offshore drilling platforms) and the temporary protection of steel sheets (shop primers) during newbuilding of ships. Zinc coatings are specified in standards such as ISO 12944, Norsok M-501, SSPC-Paint 20, and the new IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC).
Zinc primers are considered to be the most effective anti-corrosion paint systems in use and have proven their excellent performance over many decades. The thickness of the zinc primers can vary between 10 and 120 microns ; the higher the thickness and the higher the zinc powder content are in the paint, the longer the corrosion protection of the steel will last. This article reviews types of zinc powder and how they are made, types and composition of zinc primers, the corrosion protection mechanisms of zinc primers, suitable uses of the primers, and tips on application.Note de contenu : - Zinc powder : the main constituent of zinc primers

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The information derived from impedance diagrams obtained by using electrochemical sensors specifically designed for lap joints testing of coated metallic sheets is analyzed. The electrochemical sensors were made by means of steel or zinc sheets, uncontaminated or contaminated with variable amounts of sodium chloride, and overcoated with organic coatings. Such sensors show the effect of the nature of the metallic substrate, the underfilm saline contamination, and the relative humidity of the environment outside the lap joint. The results show that the information obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on the behavior within the lap joints can be assessed by the criteria traditionally used for plain painted metal surfaces.By modeling the data, it is possible to discriminate between effects due to the organic coating and to the corrosion reaction at the metal-coating interface.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An investigation was done on the influences of current density and pH on the electrodeposition behavior of Zn–Ni–Fe alloys using a sulfate bath. The bath consisted of 0.1 M ZnSO4, 0.1 M NiSO4, 0.1 M FeSO4, 0.2 M Na2SO4, 0.2 M H3BO3, and 0.01 M H2SO4. The results of Zn–Ni–Fe alloys’ codeposition revealed that the significant inhibition of Ni and Fe deposition takes place because of the presence of Zn2+ in the plating bath. A transition current density was noticed above wherein a transition from normal to anomalous deposition took place. Bright and uniform surface appearance deposits of Zn–Ni–Fe were the results obtained at pH range 2–5, and the deposits showed high corrosion resistance. During the investigation, the usage of cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic techniques for electrodeposition were utilized, while linear polarization resistance and anodic linear sweeping voltammetry techniques were used for the corrosion study. Characterization of morphology and the chemical composition of the deposits were performed by means of scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The objective of this work was to compare the anticorrosion effects of organic coatings containing zinc metal consisting of either lamellar particles or isometric particles and to reduce the zinc metal content of the coatings while preserving their high anticorrosion efficiency. The optimization and Zn metal content reduction can be achieved using zinc with a lamellar particle shape and application of conductive polymers. Conductive polymers are expected to enhance the electrochemical effect of zinc metal in paints. Organic coatings with lamellar zinc particles also exhibit better mechanical properties. Optimization of the amount of zinc lamellar particles could promote a wider use of this material in anticorrosion paints. The conductive polymers used in this work included polyaniline phosphate, polyaniline benzoate, and carbonized polyaniline. A solvent-based epoxy–ester resin served as the binder. Model paints consisting of this resin and containing different concentrations of polyaniline phosphate, polyaniline benzoate, and carbonized polyaniline were prepared. The paints were tested at the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC) of Zn dust and at lower Zn dust concentrations, specifically 2% below the CPVC. The paints containing combinations of zinc and a conductive polymer contained the sum of the pigments just below the CPVC of the zinc dust species used. This implies a level of 39% of (PVCZn-lam) for the systems with lamellar zinc and a level of 61% of (PVCZn–sf) for the systems with spherical zinc. The pigment volume concentration (PVC) of the conductive polymers in the zinc-containing paints was (based on results obtained previously) 1%, 5%, and 10% in the systems with lamellar zinc and 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% in the systems with spherical zinc. The organic coatings were subjected to accelerated cyclic corrosion tests and electrochemical measurements. The sample containing polyaniline carbonate (PVC = 1%) and spherical zinc exhibited a significantly lower corrosion rate as compared to that of uncoated steel.
