Tannage Résumé : The leather industry in India and elsewhere have adopted a two stage processing methodology wherein hides/skins are processed up to wet blue in stage one, and subsequently converted to value added products in stage two. The process of rechroming carried out when wet blue leathers are sourced from various vendors thus attains significance. Many tanners prefer to employ chromium based synthetic tanning agents for rechroming, as against basic chromium sulfate, so as to provide for a tanning at higher pH values of above 3.5 – 4.0. Chromium based synthetic tanning agents in addition to employing masked chromium salts also provide for increased fullness to the leather. A significantly large number of these synthetic tanning agents are based on formaldehyde condensed aromatic intermediates, the use of which could result in the presence of free formaldehyde in the crust leathers. Instances of poorer raw material quality also call for the use of melamine-based syntans for preferential filling of the belly regions. In this work, the application of a chromium based melamine syntan devoid of the use of formaldehyde for condensation is reported. The product has been evaluated in tanning, rechroming and post tanning (as a retanning agent). In tanning, the product provides for a shrinkage temperature of 106oC, 3.25-3.75% Cr2O3 content (dry weight) alongside good belly filling. On use in rechroming or post tanning, the product provides for fuller leathers complete with physical properties meeting standard norms. The results indicate that the newly developed product has a significant scope in increasing the cutting value of the leathers by way of providing uniform substance alongside good tanning properties.

Tannage Résumé : Wet-white tanning as an eco-friendly leather-making process has been attracting considerable attention. Herein, we have investigated a novel combination tannage for lightfast wet-white leather based on sulfone syntan and aluminium tanning agent. By optimizing the technology, 10% sulfone syntan and 3% aluminum tanning agent at final pH 4.0 - 4.5 can raise the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of the wet-white leather to ~81°C. The synergistic tanning mechanism of the two has been illustrated. As verified by Zeta potential measurements, the introduction of Al3+ into the sulfone syntan system led to the increase in the isoelectric point (IEP) of wet-white leather, which is favorable for the subsequent post-tanning process. Scanning electron microscope-Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) results reveal that sulfone syntan and aluminum tanning agent can be evenly bound within the leather matrix and promote the formation of tightly woven networks of collagen fibers. The novel combination tanning approach not only improves light fastness and lighter shade, but also confers high physical and mechanical properties to the wet-white leather. Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has recently proposed a new regulation for the placing on the market of mixtures and articles containing bisphenols. If the draft is implemented without changes, this will - after various transition times - result in very low limits for these chemicals in leather auxiliaries and leather articles. When it comes to syntans, bisphenols are raw materials and unwanted side products, respectively. State-of-the-art production technologies for syntans might not succeed in lowering bisphenol content to the proposed limits, though. As syntans play an essentiel part in the production of almost all of today's leather articles, the new regulation will lead to a disruptive change in the selection of chemicals in common recipes. Zschimmer & Schwarz has anticipated this issue and presents the first solutions to achieve completely bisphenol-free leather. Note de contenu : - Importance of syntans

UréeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The results of conductometric and spectrophotometric investigations suggest that the Cr-Al synthetic tanning materials form micelles at a particular concentration below which they do not normally form. The CMC is determined for Cr-Al syntan in aqueous as well as in different additive environments at different temperatures. With this micellisation concept, a new equation for the determination of the association constant (Ka) for the mixed system is framed obeying the law of mass action principle. The validity of this equation is established in glycine, urea and NaCl environments as model systems. From the temperature dependence of the association constant and with the help of the Gibb's equation, various thermodynamic parameters were estimated. The above analysis has also beenmodelled conceptually as a different phase. The thermodynamic parameters supported the transfer of Cr-Al syntan to glycine (at 25-54°C) and urea (at 25°C or below) containing sites, whereas the reverse is not true. The reverse is true for urea at temperatures above 25°C and for NaCl also (at 25-54°C). Evidence was also obtained for the Cr-Al syntan micelles to exist more freely in the hydrophilic group of glycine than that of urea. The special ande peculiar properties of urea is invoked. In the presence of urea, the destabilisation or stabilisation of Cr-Al lsyntan micelles has been observed through disruption or reorganisation of the hydrogen bond, which depends on temperature.
It has also been seen that the concentration of Cr-Al syntan above CMC (preferably five to ten times of CMC) is useful for tanning processes whereas below CMC is not practically useful. The main aim for the preparation of Cr-Al syntan was to enhance the fixation of both Cr and Al, high shrinkage temperature and light fastness.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : The CMC of Cr-Al syntan in aqueous as well as in presence of various additives environments and at various temperatures
