Tannage Résumé : The leather industry, world over, has adopted several new practices as a part of their green initiative. In this study the chrome tanning process, one of the most important steps in leather making, was evaluated for its ‘greenness’. The prominent tool employed for assessing greenness for an industrial process, atom economy (the conversion efficiency of a chemical process in terms of all atoms involved) was studied for the first time for four types of chrome tanning processes: direct chrome liquor recycle (DCLR), ethanolamine-assisted, pickleless chrome tanning, and conventional chrome tanning. All chemicals involved in the reaction with skin protein were taken into consideration for the computation of overall atom economy. An atom economy of only 29% was obtained for the conventional chrome tanning system. Among the four improved methods of chrome tanning evaluated, the pickleless chrome tanning method provides the maximum atom economy of about 57% followed by ethanolamine and DCLR, having atom economies of 42 and 32%, respectively.

Tannage Résumé : Lime fleshings were hydrolysed with a proteolytic enzyme and further broken down to the amino acid level (as previously described) before preparing the corresponding aldehyde, which was then used as a cross-linking agent in tanning, in the study the product is labelled as CA.
In this study, the cross-linking agent prepared above was used as an exhaust aid in chrome tanning, rechroming and vegetable tanning to give improved tannin exhaustion. Using 2% cross-linking agent in chrome tanning improved chrome exhaustion from 67 ± 1.0% to 92 ± 1.5%; similarly, in vegetable tanning, the exhaustion of wattle extract increased from 86% to 93%.
Effluent value reductions were found together with improvements in shrinkage temperature, dyeing properties and physical strength. The chrome tanned crust leather and rechromed crust leathers were softer and tighter than control leathers.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL METHODS : Use of crosslinking agent (CA ) in chrome tanning - Use of CA in rechroming - Use of CA in vegetable tanning

ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A novel method of high performance leather prepared via in situ reduction of graphene oxide after tanning was proposed in this research. First, nano-graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by an improved Hummers method. Then, the prepared GO was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, GO was added during the chrome tanning process, and GO was reduced by ascorbic acid after the chrome tanning was completed. Moreover, the shrinkage temperature, tensile strength, tear strength and thermal conductivity of the finished leather were investigated. The results showed that the absorption of chrome tanning agent was significantly improved by the addition of GO. The tensile strength, tear strength, and the thermal conductivity of the resulted leather obviously surpassed the leather tanned by chrome tanning agent. Specifically, the tensile strength and tear strength of the leather reached 21.25 MPa and 163.95 N·mm-1 , respectively, when the amount of reducing agent was ten times the amount of GO. A combination of the tanning of leather and the in situ reduction of GO is expected to become a new processing method for preparation of high performance.

ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The influence of microwave irradiation on chromium sulphate solution was studied to provide a foundation for effectively utilizing microwave in the tanning process. The chromium sulphate solution was heated by microwave with a sample heated by water bath at the same condition as a control. During the process, the pH, conductivity, dielectric constant and UV-Visible absorption spectrum of chromium sulphate were measured to study the influence of different heating methods on chromium complexes hydrolysis and on the olation process. The results demonstrated that both microwave and water both methods could lead to the chromium sulphate pH dropping, conductivity increasing, UV-Visible characteristic absorption peak shifting to violet, R value enlarging and dielectric constant increasing. However, the microwave irradiation had much more obvious effects on these changes than the water bath, indicating that microwave irradiation could promote chromium sulphate hydrolysis and dation further. This research proved the both uniform thermal effect and non-thermal effect in the chromium sulphate solution under microwave irradiation, and that these affects could benefit the chrome tanning process in the future.
