Tannage Résumé : Neutralized chrome leathers (pH 6.3) were retanned with typical anionic retanning agents acrylic resin (AC), amino resin (AR) and mimosa extract (ME) alone or together. The isoelectric points (pIs) of the retanned leathers were determined using a zeta potential analyzer for solid- state materials, and the penetratiOn as well as the uptake of the retanning agents in the leathers was analyzed using a fluorescent tracing technique. It was found that the pIs of the surface layers of the leathers retanned with 3% of AC, AR or ME alone became below 5.4, while the pIs of their middle layers were still around 7.4. The pIs of the upper, the middle and the lower layers of the leather retanned with 3% AC, 3% AR and 3% ME together were very close and below 3.6. Additionally, greater penetrations and uptakes of the retanning agents were obtained after retanning with AC, AR and ME together compared to alone. These results indicate that retanning with more and various anionic retanning agents is very useful for a more thorough decrease in the pI of the chrome-tanned leather and favors the penetration and the uptake of the retanning agents in the leather. Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Acid-deterioration (commonly known as red-rot in leather) occurs in vegetable tanned leathers that were predominantly manufactured from the mid 19th century onwards, and is observed in a variety of historic leather artefacts, such as bookbinding leather, gilt leather, screens, wall hangings, upholstery and luggage. Acid-deteriorated leathers are acidic (pH>-3.0) and show a lower shrinkage temperature (Ts), which may be as low as 30°C. The visible changes in the deteriorated leather usually include fine cracking, a powdery surface with complete or partial loss of the grain layer (shown in figure 1).
The following two factors are considered to be responsible for acid-deterioration in leather.Note de contenu : - Materials and methods

Mimosa et constituantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study seeks to devise a method that allows us to reduce the pollution parameters of the waste waters produced during the transformation of hides into leather. Tanning with vegetable extracts contributes to the COD values of the resulting waste waters and thus we have investigated the possibility of eliminating vegetable extracts by means of adsorption with bentonite. The influence of the acid activation level of the bentonite on its adsorption capacity has also been studied.
Natural bentonite activated with sulphuric acid 0.5 N is the most suitable adsorbent for removing mimosa extract. The isotherm of adsorption of mimosa extract with bentonite seems to be of the L type in accordance with the classification given by Giles. This mechanism implies that as more sites in the substrate are filled, it becomes increasingly difficult for a new solute molecule to find a vacant site. The adsorption process gives rise to a diminution of the COD values as expected.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE :

Quebracho est l'un des noms communs, en espagnol, d'au moins trois espèces similaires d'arbres originaires du Gran Chaco, en Amérique latine : Schinopsis lorentzii (quebracho colorado santiagueño), de la famille des Anacardiaceae ; Schinopsis balansae (quebracho colorado chaqueño), de la même famille ;

Tannage Résumé : Biocides are widely used in leather production for the purpose of preventing microorganism activity in the soaking process. Biocides include chemical components that are harmful for both human health and environment. In this study, we examined the anti-bacterial activity of different vegetable tannins against bacteria in the soaking float. To this end; tannins of quebracho, mimosa, gall-nut, chestnut and valonia were added to the float for 8h and 24h soaking processes in order to examine the effect of these tannins on bacteria, the results were compared with the control group. Subsequently, gall-nut and chestnut extracts were observed to be effective against bacteria in the float during 8h soaking process, while gall-nut was found to be more effective than other vegetable tannins in 24h soaking period.
