PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Formation behavior of fine fibers of polymethylpentene (PMP) and polypropylene (PP) in the melt blowing process was investigated through the observation of the spin-line near the spinning nozzle using a high speed camera. Reduction of the polymer throughput rate and increase of the air flow rate were necessary to achieve fine diameter fibers, however these conditions generally cause the instability in the spinning process. Observation of the spin-line at the melt blowing die revealed the periodic accumulation of polymer flow near the spinning nozzle followed by the quick pulling down of the accumulated polymer by the air flow. This behavior caused the periodic fluctuation of fiber diameter as well as the intermittent breakage of the spin-line under extreme conditions. Because of high extrusion viscosity, PMP showed more stable spinning behavior than PP. Frequency of diameter fluctuation became higher with the increases of air flow rate and throughput rate, and the maximum frequency of about 60 Hz was observed for PP spinning with the throughput rate of 0.18 g/min. Diameter distribution of the fibers in the prepared web was also analyzed to compare with the spinning behavior. Fiber diameter distributions were narrow and symmetric under stable spinning conditions, whereas skewed diameter profiles with a maximum at low value and a long tail to the larger diameter region were observed under unstable conditions. Intermittent spin-line breakage caused flaws of "shot" and/or "fly", and the skewed fiber diameter distribution with the presence of a small amount of fiber of extremely large diameter was confirmed. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Using capillary dies having different diameters, D, and length-to-diameter L/D ratios, a full rheological characterization has been carried out for a polypropylene melt, and the experimental data have been fitted both with a viscous model (Cross) and a viscoelastic one (the Kaye – Bernstein, Kearsley, Zapas/Papanastasiou, Scriven, Macosko or K-BKZ/PSM model). Particular emphasis has been given on the pressure-dependence of viscosity. It was found that only the viscoelastic simulations were capable of reproducing the experimental data well, while any viscous modeling always underestimates the pressures, especially at the higher apparent shear rates and L/D ratios. Produits et matériaux recyclésIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : The production of PP fibers by melt spinning from recycled PP, resulting from the ionic solvent-based recycling of waste carpet piles, was studied in the article. From the different recycled materials supplied by the project partner Sabanci University, it was possible to understand that materials with lower content of ionic liquid (Isoprep 2 and 3) were more suitable for the compounding and melt spinning processes. From these, a melt spun fiber using 100% of the Isoprep 3 material was successfully produced. The obtained fibers fulfil the minimum requirements of weaving processes in terms of tenacity and elongation at break, but optimizations are still needed mainly regarding the improvement of mechanical properties.

Matières plastiquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Plastic freeforming - A new additive production system melts standard polymer pellets as in conventional injection molding, then generates droplets from the melt, building up fully-functional parts layer by layer. It thus allows parts to be produced individually from 3-D CAD data, without an injection mold and from a batch size of one. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The multidimensional output-pressure behavior of non-Newtonian fluids in single-screw extrusion can only be determined by using numerical methods. We present two methods which employ mathematical models building on analytic equations developed using an evolutionary heuristic optimization algorithm. Both allow fast and stable calculation of the 2-dimensional throughput–pressure gradient relationship of single-screw extruders, rendering cost-intensive CFD simulations of the output-pressure behavior redundant. A performed error analysis showed that our methods yield good approximations of the numerically determined data. Note de contenu : - STATE OF THE ART
