Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Colloidal silica nanoparticles synthesized from tetraethoxysiliane via a sol–gel process were surface modified by 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MSMA) and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). MSMA acted both as a C=C provider and a coupling agent, whereas HMDS was used to prevent particle aggregation and engender hydrophobicity. The modified silica particles (HMSiO2) were UV-cured together with the crosslinking agent, dipentaerythritol hexa-acrylate (DPHA) to form coatings on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates. Dynamic light scattering of the synthesized sols indicated that the average size of HMSiO2 was ca. 10 nm, consistent with that obtained from TEM imaging. FTIR spectroscopic analyses demonstrated chemical attachment of HMDS to the silica particles. The cured coatings were characterized in terms of water contact angle, light transmittance, hardness, abrasion resistance, and surface morphology. It was found that hydrophobicity of the coatings increased while light transmittance and hardness decreased with increasing HMDS content. DPHA played the role of providing mechanical strength and adherence; however, the coatings became lightly hazy when the weight ratio of DPHA/silica fell in the range 0.3–0.7. In the optimal case, a hard coating (4H) with water contact angle of 108° and transmittance of ~100% (vs PMMA) had been obtained at the DPHA content of 10 wt%.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Transparent ultrahydrophobic films were synthesized by sol–gel process with organic silicones modified into silica sol and cured under UV irradiation. The effects of hydrolysis temperature, hydrolysis time, molar ratio of organic silicone to silica sol, and surface morphology on the hydrophobicity of the films were discussed in detail using FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AFM, optical transmission, and contact angle measurement, respectively. The AFM and SEM images indicated that the surface roughness enhanced the hydrophobicity of the films. The results revealed that methyl-trimethoxysilane (MTMS)-modified silica film prepared at 50°C for 2 h with an MTMS/silica sol molar ratio of 1:10 had a very high contact angle (130°). However, the higher hydrolysis temperature and longer reaction time might have accelerated the self-condensation of silanol and decreased the contact angle of the films. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Here, waterborne coatings with enhanced physico-mechanical properties were prepared by incorporation of modified silica nanoparticles into an acrylic matrix through miniemulsion polymerization. In order to circumvent the inherent incompatibility of organic and inorganic portions, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate molecules were chemically coupled to the surface of silica nanoparticles to alter the hydrophilic nature of inorganic nanoparticles to hydrophobic ones. Also, for investigating the effect of the exploited surface modification process, unmodified silica nanoparticles were used in preparing acrylic latex via miniemulsion polymerization. The optical and physico-mechanical properties of the acrylic–silica nanocomposite films with 0–10 wt% of unmodified and modified SiO2 were characterized by measuring their surface roughness, haziness, gloss values, UV–Vis transmittance, scratch resistance, tensile, and pendulum hardness. It was found that by using modified SiO2 nanoparticles, due to their better dispersion state and ability for establishing covalent linkage with acrylic polymer chains, it is possible to obtain nanocomposite coatings with improved physico-mechanical properties, high transparency in Vis region, considerable UV adsorption, and comparable surface roughness, glossiness, and haziness with pure acrylic film. However, unmodified silica nanoparticles formed many aggregates in the polymer matrix which deteriorated optical and different physico-mechanical properties of acrylic latex. It was found that the greatest improvement in properties is achieved by incorporation of 7 wt% modified silica nanoparticles in acrylic polymer. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wood surfaces have an increased popularity as they combine extraordinary beauty, modern design and the use of renewable materials. Many spectacular high-rise construction projects made out of wood ail over the world can be observed, such as the 85m high Wood Hotel in Mjosa (Norway) or the HoHo building in Vienna (Austria). Wood is also high trending especially in luxury interior design in shipbuilding, aerospace and transportation. Its ecological footprint is also driving demand for wood as a building material. Reducing carbon dioxide is becoming increasingly important in almost ail sectors. In this context, wood can help reduce the amount of CO2 emissions generated by a construction project.
Building regulations exist in areas with higher than average fire risk, such as public buildings like airports and train stations, shopping mails, cinemas, theatres, libraries, schools, offices, hotels, hospitals and many others. Wood in exterior applications — whether natural wood, cross laminated timber or other wooden materials — must perform in fire situations and be protected against fire. The use of wood is permitted if the high-performance requirements of the building regulations and other regulatory requirements are met.
Fire-retardant coatings must not only protect against fire, but also preserve the beauty of wood. Visually appealing and reliable fire protection is possible with intumescent coatings, enabling the safe use of wood-based panel products in both interior and exterior situations - from load-bearing structures to interior trim and exterior cladding.Note de contenu : - Why wood needs a flame-retarfant treatment ?
