The study was conducted using melamine crosslinked acrylic latex basecoat and acrylic acid/epoxy clearcoat. The focus of the project was directed toward the paint application and dehydration stages. The study was conducted in four phases. In Phase 1, three paint application parameters, flow rate (FR), atomizing air (AA), and distance of the applicator tip from the substrate (D), were investigated. In Phase 2, FR and target distance were investigated in relation to popping while keeping other parameters as well as film build constant. In Phase 3, the effect of film build on popping was investigated by selecting three levels of film build. Phase 4 was focused on the possible effect of dehydration oven temperature on popping. Results indicated that FR does not affect popping directly. However, it significantly affects the film build. Both film build and dehydration oven temperature were found significant in relation to popping occurrences. This work suggests that dehydration oven temperature and film build affect solvent popping. Although this study identified the significant factors causing waterborne basecoat popping, conditions for a pop-free paint surface were not established. Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The use of melamine salts of phosphoric and pyrophosphoric acid in flame-retardant coatings, particularly intumescent coatings, is reviewed. Recent insights into mode of action suggest that several vapor phase and solid phase actions occur, involving both the melamine and the phosphoric acid portions of the salt molecule. Melamine phosphates cover a wide range of stabilities and vary in water solubility. Melamine pyrophosphate is the most thermally stable and the least water soluble of the available melamine phosphates. Fire-retardant coating applications are known for the melamine phosphates in coatings based on tung oil, chlorinated rubber, various vinyl latices, epoxy and amino resins. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The leather industry in India and elsewhere have adopted a two stage processing methodology wherein hides/skins are processed up to wet blue in stage one, and subsequently converted to value added products in stage two. The process of rechroming carried out when wet blue leathers are sourced from various vendors thus attains significance. Many tanners prefer to employ chromium based synthetic tanning agents for rechroming, as against basic chromium sulfate, so as to provide for a tanning at higher pH values of above 3.5 – 4.0. Chromium based synthetic tanning agents in addition to employing masked chromium salts also provide for increased fullness to the leather. A significantly large number of these synthetic tanning agents are based on formaldehyde condensed aromatic intermediates, the use of which could result in the presence of free formaldehyde in the crust leathers. Instances of poorer raw material quality also call for the use of melamine-based syntans for preferential filling of the belly regions. In this work, the application of a chromium based melamine syntan devoid of the use of formaldehyde for condensation is reported. The product has been evaluated in tanning, rechroming and post tanning (as a retanning agent). In tanning, the product provides for a shrinkage temperature of 106oC, 3.25-3.75% Cr2O3 content (dry weight) alongside good belly filling. On use in rechroming or post tanning, the product provides for fuller leathers complete with physical properties meeting standard norms. The results indicate that the newly developed product has a significant scope in increasing the cutting value of the leathers by way of providing uniform substance alongside good tanning properties.
