Tannage Résumé : In the present study we have synthesised thermoresponsive syntan using phase changing material (PCM) encapsulated into a replacement syntan. Syntan was analysed for their particle size, thermal response was verified using Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and surface morphology was analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These syntans were applied to leathers for making leather thermoresponsive. The thermal comfort range achieved on leathers prepared using the experimental syntan was about 2.5℃, compared to control of about 0.5℃ with an error of ±0.5℃. The physical and strength properties of experimental leathers were superior compared to control. SoufreIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Chamois leathers find application in fuel filtration and cleaning. Recently, use of chamois leathers is explored in the development of sports garments, gloves and other personal wear. However, one of the consumer demand viz. different colors on the end product is not met by chamois leathers. Hence, dyeing is essential to make it more attractive for end user applications. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop colored chamois leather by employing water soluble sulphur dyes. The offer of sulphur dyes have been optimized based on dyeing characteristics, color fastness and color values. The results indicate that offer of 1 and 2% of the dyes show better colour value and fastness to rubbing. Hence, it could be inferred that coloring of chamois leathers not only improved the aesthetic appeal but also helped in adding value without altering inherent properties of chamois leather. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The development of commercially successful salt-free chrome tanning technology is the need of global leather sector to reduce the total dissolved solids in wastewater. Though some attempts have been made to develop salt-free chrome tanning technology, drawbacks such as slow diffusion of chromium, unevenness in softness and other organoleptic properties are the major concern. The generation of localized acid swelling might be a reason for the above drawbacks and no scientific literature available for the same. Hence, it is important to analyze the effect of acid swelling and its impact on the diffusion of chromium, ageing characteristics of wet-blue leather and physical properties of crust leather. The results show that the acid swelling delays the diffusion of chromium in tanning process and also enhances the growth marks on wet-blue leather. The ageing study reveals that the wet-blue obtained from acid swollen system dehydrates faster than the conventional salt based chromium tanning system. In addition, the wet-blue leather from acid swollen system is prone to fungal attack. The industrial glove leather obtained from acid swollen system has reduced strength characteristics viz., 15% reduction in tensile strength, 17% reduction in tear strength and 20% reduction in grain crack/bursting strength. Further, the degree of heterogeneity in softness is high for crust leather obtained from acid swollen system and also more looseness with internal emptiness. Color value measurements reveal that the crust leather obtained from the conventional tanning system is lighter in shade than the acid-swollen system. The results will be useful to design commercially viable salt-free or low-salt tanning systems as well as to tackle the inadvertent industrial scenario where the tanners are looking for solutions for accidental acid swelling and subsequent salvage of the leathers for possible recovery and applications. Liquides ioniques
Morphologie (matériaux)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather processing is known to impact the environment, especially the pre-tanning processes. Lime sludge is one of the major concerns for the industry. Application of ionic liquid (1- butyl 3- methylimidazolium chloride) instead of conventional reliming practice can reduce this problem to a large extent. In this study, the effect of different unhairing process on the fiber opening using ionic liquids has been studied. The extent of fiber opening was assessed for both control and experimental pelts through SEM analysis. The experimental pelts were found to have better fiber opening than the control. The ionic liquid fiber opened pelts were tanned and the spent liquors were assessed for the chrome content, COD, TDS. The results indicate that all the environmental parameters are better or on par with the conventional process. The final leathers made were also found to have physical characteristics similar to that of conventionally limed leathers. PolyacryliquesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The current study attempts to investigate the surface phenomenon and physical characteristics of leather finished with brown pigment and different types of acrylic binders. Using the contact angle measurements of three different liquids on the above finished leathers and films, the surface energy and work of adhesion were evaluated. The pigment to acrylic binder ratio (PABR) for best adhesion of finish film on the leather surface was optimized using the contact angle goniometer. Different types of acrylic binder films were coated and their surface behaviour was studied. The crust leather was coated with different types of pigment-acrylic binder (Very Soft, Soft and Medium Soft) finish formulations. The contact angle of both the acrylic films and the PABR finished leathers were measured against Water, Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and Hexadecane (HD). According to the study’s results, the surface properties of finished leather were directly related to the degree of wetting. The PABR was found to be effective at 1:3 for very soft binder, 1:2.5 for soft, 1:2 for medium soft binders due to higher contact angle and lower surface energy values (γsv). At 1:3 and 1:2.5, the contact angle of very soft and soft binder leather was 82.62° and 83.45° and for medium soft binder it was 82.67° at 1:2 ratio. The surface energy values of optimized PABR of very soft binder (1:3) was 28.29 (mN/M), soft binder (1:2.5) was 27.50 (mN/m) and medium soft binder (1:2) was 29.27 (mN/m). The optimized PABR work of adhesion values of very soft binder, soft binder and medium soft binder was 82.15 (mJm-2), 81.11 (mJm-2), 82.09 (mJm-2). In order to correlate the observed surface properties with leather finish properties, finished leathers were tested for finish adhesion, vamp flexing value, water vapour permeability, wet and dry rub fastness. According to the water vapour permeability, soft and medium binder showed good permeation due to the uncovering of nanopores. But the adhesion, grain crack resistance and grain smoothness were higher in the case of the soft binder. Overall leather properties divulges that the pigment to binder ratio and the type of binder plays an important role in surface properties of the finished leather. This study enables us to determine the optimal PABR for effective finish properties to meet the required leather standards for various usage, as well as better utilisation of finishing chemicals.
