The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) has been steadily increasing because of superior specific strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance. Machining of CFRP structures is often necessary for achieving final dimensions following cure and for assembly operations. Edge trimming or milling is the mot common secondaryprocessing method for achieving net engineering geometry and hole drilling is the most common method for producing features necessary for assembly. There are significant differences between the machining of metals and composites due to the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the material system. The choice of constituent materials and fiber orientation has the most significant influence on the cutting process. A common concern when drilling and trimming CFRP materials is machining quality, which is essential for dimensional accuracy, and minimizing defects. Chip formation modes, abrasiveness of the fibers, cutting tool selection, and cutting conditions impact hole and edge quality of machined components. This paper will provide some recent experimental results along with a review of the issues and challenges for edge trimming and drilling of CFRP materialsNote de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL WORK : Edge trimming and drilling experiments.
(Wikipedia)

UsinageIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The demand for the machining and cutting of plastic parts is in continuous increase. The present study is intended to investigate the optimization of high density polyethylene (HDPE-100) orthogonal turning operation using the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). Accordingly, experimental tests based on Taguchi method are performed to establish a correlation between cutting parameters on one hand and machining force, specific cutting force and roughness of machined surface on the other hand. An optimal parameters combination for the turning process is obtained. In addition to regression models deduction, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is applied to identify the most significant factors. It is found that the order of the importance of controllable factors to the tangential cutting force (Ft) is feed rate (f), depth of cut (ap) and cutting speed (Vc). However, when considering the importance with respect to specific cutting force (Ks), the order becomes (Vc), (ap) and (f). Finally, the order of cutting parameters according to mean roughness criteria, represented by (Ra), (Rz) and (Rt), shifts to (f), (Vc) and (ap). The optimized cutting regime ensuring minimization of roughness and cutting forces is well described by Vc = 188 m/min, f = 0.14 mm/rev and ap = 3 mm. This study unveiled new approaches based on combined GRA and ANOVA for machining other polymers such as tough reinforced polymers and composites used as human prosthesis. Textiles et tissus à usages techniquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The usage for fibre-reinforced plastics is gaining in importance worldwide and is a continually growing market - for example in large components like wind turbine blades or aeroplane wings.
However, it is in essence still a bespoke manufacture rather than serial production. Robot blades in particular are increasing in size while the production remains predominantly manual.Note de contenu : - Automation technology

Polyéthylène basse densitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Studies to improve the machining of engineering materials have great importance for mechanical systems. Abrasive water-jet turning (AWJT) is a new and effective process for increasing machinability of engineering materials by providing temperature free cutting conditions, high surface quality and having no tool wear problem. In this study, AWJT of low density polyethylene (LDPE) material were investigated in terms of average surface roughness (ASR) and material removal rate (MRR) values and process parameters were optimized by experimental design method. The primary objectives of the study are to investigate AWJT process and system parameters to enhance machinability of LDPE material and to determine optimal processing parameters. Nozzle feed rate (5, 25 and 45 mm/min), abrasive flow rate (50, 200 and 350 g/min) and spindle speed (1 000, 1 500 and 2 500 min?1) were analyzed as process parameters. Taguchi L27 orthogonal full factorial design, optimization box and analysis of variance (Anova) were used for the experimentation and results analysis. Experimental results show that, AWJT process is more efficient in the machining of LPDE material than the conventional machining methods by increasing surface quality and MRR parameters. Minimum ASR and maximum MRR were obtained 1.67 ?m and 14 072.02 mm3/min respectively; at optimum parameters of 5 mm/min nozzle feed rate, 350 g/min abrasive flow rate and 2 500 min?1 spindle speed.
