This proves especially true in the design of coatings with targeted properties that meet required VOCs. In 1946 when Dow Chemical Co. first introduced latexes to the coatings market, there was an immediate need for understanding film formation from waterborne polymeric particles. These latexes are synthesized by an emulsion polymerization technique. One of the prime factors to be considered in the choice of a commercial latex or a latex blend to be grafted is the glass transition temperature(s) of the polymer(s) in the final latex desired. The graft latexes were characterized in terms of glass transition temperature, solids content, bromine content, grafted dibromostyrene content, and flame retardancy. They are useful for a wide range of applications, including fabric backcoatings, carpetings, paints, adhesives, sealants, caulks, nonwoven binders, etc. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Characterization

Revêtements -- Défauts:Peinture -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Flooding and floating are problems in many paint applications. If pigment concentration is uniform on the surface but not through the thickness of the film, one refers to 'flooding' (horizontal separation). If, however, concentration differences are visible across the surface of the paint film, one refers to 'floating' (vertical separation). In this article, the influence of pigment, filler, additives, and processing conditions on the flooding and floating of colored latex paint were investigated. It was discovered that too broad a distribution of pigment and filler particle size can lead to flooding and floating. Different levels of pigment (TiO2) or filler (kaolin) loading cause diverse degrees of flooding and floating. Waterborne coatings that do not exhibit flooding or floating may show these conditions when diluted. Using dispersants or thickeners with hydrophobic constituents, increasing viscosity, reducing surface tension, etc., all help to prevent or reduce flooding and floating. Comparison tests revealed little influence of processing conditions on flooding or floating. Mélanges (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fluorescence decay methods have been used extensively to characterize the formation of polymer films from latex dispersions, a process widely used in the coatings industry. By measuring the polymer chain diffusion at the nanometer scale, this technique enables the quantification of the amount of mixing between polymer particles that ultimately contributes to the formation of a polymer coating with good mechanical properties. This article provides an introduction to fluorescence decay methods, with a strong emphasis on their application to the characterization of latex film formation. Examples are also provided, demonstrating how this technique has been used to help in the understanding of this process in different latex coatings.
