Vêtements en cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The objective of this study was to identify changes in stress-relaxation and tear strength of New Zealand cervine leather after shaving to various thicknesses and then laminating it to an extensible fabric. The load and work required to extend laminated cervine leather (multi-axially) to a specified extension limit was greater and less variable than if lamination had not been carried out. A higher stress-relaxation during cycling was evident with the composite material, although the rate of change was no different to that for non-laminated leather. The difference in work between the initial cycle and subsequent cycles was greater with laminated leather. Reducing the thickness of the leather resulted in a greater deformation height (bagging) and a lower load and work in multiaxial extension, stress-relaxation, tear initiation, and tear strength. Deformation was reduced by laminating the leather only in the case of the thinnest leather. Laminating cervine leather partially reversed the adverse effects of thickness reduction and decreased the differences in stress-relaxation observed amongst the three thicknesses of leather. The textured weft threads of the fabric increased the tearing strength of the composite material in the 0° direction more than in the other directions. The directional properties of the fabric may have a greater effect on garment performance than the location or orientation of the leather as cut from a hide. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The paper discusses the impact of drawing poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers in the presence of solvents, which consist of the first five homologues of aliphatic primary alcohols, namely methanol to amyl alcohol. The solvent induced deformation under tensile load leads to surface fissures characterized by four stages: fissure formation (birth), incipient draw (neck formation), partial draw, and full draw. This process results in internal void formation in the presence of a propagating neck. A design of experiment (DOE) was performed to screen out the process parameters critical for understanding surface fissure formation. Four process parameters were investigated: initial material properties (orien„tation) ; environment of draw (i.e. type of alcohols used as solvent) ; rate of extension ; and amount of extension. The response of solvent induced deformation were characterized by the natural draw force reduction ; number of fissures formed at time of birth, fissure width at time of formation, and neck angle. Of all the four process parameters involved, the analysis indicates that the material properties and amount of extension were the best predictors of solvent induced fissure formation. Organic solvents reduce the tension required for draw and create internal voids, a porous network, with possibly the penetrant being "sucked" into the interior of PET fibers drawn in the presence of alcohols.

Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The aim of this work was to design a new pretanning formulation by using the fruit of the Tara tree (Cæsalpinia Spinosa) as the sole source of vegetable tannin. The innovative aspect of this work embodies a new-tailored tara product which gave its tannin the enhanced ability to readily penetrate the leather cross section, and thus made it unnecessary for the tanner to add aldehydes, syntans, other common vegetable tannins and mineral salts. Specifically, physical modifications had been developed in part II of this broad study to obtain a modified tara with a higher percentage of tannins and with a better ability to penetrate/fix in leather by sieving and milling (see Low carbon products to design innovative leather processes. Part I: determination of the optimal chemical modification of tara1 and Low carbon products to design innovative leather processes. Part II: determination of the optimal physical modification of tara).2 We developed in this work an innovative, eco-friendly and optimal wet white formulation which has a maximum offer to leather of 9% modified tara and a maximum 2% naphthalene sulphonic syntan dispersing agent.
