Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Acid-deterioration (commonly known as red-rot in leather) occurs in vegetable tanned leathers that were predominantly manufactured from the mid 19th century onwards, and is observed in a variety of historic leather artefacts, such as bookbinding leather, gilt leather, screens, wall hangings, upholstery and luggage. Acid-deteriorated leathers are acidic (pH>-3.0) and show a lower shrinkage temperature (Ts), which may be as low as 30°C. The visible changes in the deteriorated leather usually include fine cracking, a powdery surface with complete or partial loss of the grain layer (shown in figure 1).
The following two factors are considered to be responsible for acid-deterioration in leather.Note de contenu : - Materials and methods

Tuyauterie -- ProtectionIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Based on two papers that appeared almost 30 years ago, chrome tanning became more commonly used to tan leathers used for pipe organs because accelerated aging tests indicated that chrome tanning was more effective at retaining tensile strength. Anecdotal evidence over the last 30 years has indicated that the chrome tanned leathers have not lasted as long as hoped. Further, the atmosphere used in the accelerated testing used sulfur dioxide; and with the improvements in air quality in many parts of the world and the removal of many coal-burning ovens in American churches and their buildings, the reason for using sulfur dioxide enriched air is less justified. The work described in this paper reproduced the results of the tests done ~30 years ago, but we have also shown that using an atmosphere that is not enriched with sulfur dioxide yields very different results, namely that vegetable tanning performs superior to chrome tanning in terms of tensile strength retention. Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of bullfrog skin, Lithobates catesbeianus, tanned with chromium salts and vegetable tannin. We also checked the influence of chemicals on the skin during the beamhouse operations. We adopted a completely randomized design for the resistance test, in a 22 factoriel arrangement: two tanning agents (vegetable tannins and chromium) and two cutting directions (longitudinal and transverse). Skin semples were collected during the beamhouse operations (soaking, liming, deliming, bating and degreasing) and analyzed for moisture, crude protein, ether extract and minerai matter. The tensile strength and elongation test, the results revealed that there was an interaction between factors (tanning agent and direction) for strength and tensile strength, indicating that both are important for best results of resistance. On the other hand, for progressive tearing tests, only the tanning agent was significant, chromium salts being the most efficient. The composition analysis showed that there was little variation in the amount of lipids during processing and there is no need for degreasing, because the skin of frogs has a low fat content which is removed in previous stages of processing.
