StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In recent years, wood-plastic composites (WPCs) have become among the most popular engineering materials. Most of their usage areas are outdoors, where they encounter various damaging factors. The weathering conditions cause significant deterioration to WPC surfaces, which negatively influences their service life. In this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles at different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, 10%) were added to a high-density polyethylene-based WPC matrix. The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the weathering performance of WPC was evaluated after 840 hours of an artificial weathering test. The highest colour changes (∆E*) were monitored with control samples exposed for 840 hours. Adding zinc oxide nanoparticles improved the ultraviolet (UV) resistance and decreased the colour changes. The wood flour content also affected the colour changes on the WPC surface. A combination of 10% zinc oxide nanoparticles and 50% wood flour content provided the lowest colour changes. The barrier effect of nanoparticles protected the WPC surfaces from UV light. Zinc oxide nanoparticles also positively affected the load transfer, which restricted the reduction in mechanical properties after the weathering test. The degradation on the surface of WPCs was also investigated using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier Transform–infrared analysis. The changes in the characteristic bands of polymer and wood indicated that surface degradation was inevitable. Light and scanning electron microscopy images also demonstrated micro-cracks and roughness on the surface of WPCs. It is concluded that UV degradation is unavoidable, but zinc oxide nanoparticles can improve surface resistance against weathering conditions.
Technique des plasmasIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In recent years, plasma technology has been successfully used in the conservation of cultural heritage. The removal of soot from historical bookbinding surfaces through a cold plasma cleaning technique is an important application. This study aims to test the efficiency of using atmospheric pressure cold plasma on cleaning and removing soot from historical leather bookbinding surfaces. Atmospheric pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) cold plasma in an oxygen environment was applied to modern leather samples that were contaminated with carbon and artificially aged. The results have been evaluated using several techniques including visual assessment, digital microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with (EDAX), Fourier Transform lnfrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflection (FTIR-ATR), mechanical properties, and colour change by UV spectrophotometer. The results have revealed that, the best removal of a soot stain through DBD cold plasma was found at 17.35W plasma power and 2 minutes exposure time. Température de transitionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Transition temperature microscopy (TTM) is a novel local thermal analysis technique that maps spatial variations in thermal properties on length scales from millimeters to nanometers. Traditional bulk thermal analysis provides a sample averaged result and cannot generally supply sufficient information about complex structures or heterogeneities within films or coatings. There currently exists a nanoscale thermal analysis (nano-TA) technique in which a nanoscale thermal probe heats a localized region on the sample surface to measure its thermal properties, including thermal transition temperatures like crystalline melting points and glass transitions. TTM enables these nano-TA measurements to be carried out rapidly at a succession of points, thus creating automated high-resolution spatial maps of the thermal properties of a sample. In this article we also demonstrate how TTM can be used to characterize chemical and structural heterogeneities and thereby generate vital information in applications ranging from coating defects, to in-situ property measurement of individual layers in multilayered films, to the detection of gradients and interfaces.
