Acier

The aim of this work is to present an alternative to the accelerated and field tests developing a semi-accelerated test for evaluating the resistance and durability of a protection system that is applied to a specific environment for one year. The samples were exposed in a corrosion cyclic test chamber for 2000 h with fixed parameters of temperature, relative moisture of air, salinity, and a number of dry-wet cycles. Mass loss of substrate in the scratch area was measured after each 250 h of testing. The second stage of research was the sensibility analysis of the corrosion rate with the change of the reference test parameters. The third stage was the testing of the samples using the cyclic test for 750 h, and the transfer of samples to a marine atmosphere exposure for one year. The mass loss was measured after each 60-day period of testing. Material characterization involved scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. After polynomial adjustment of the mass loss function associated with the sensibility analysis of the parameter alteration, the estimated life span of the samples ranged from 30 to 38 months. The epoxy coatings containing 3.5 wt% nano-sized ZnO particles were applied over the chemically treated steel samples. The corrosion resistance of the samples was studied by a DC polarization technique. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was utilized to investigate the morphology of the pretreated and post-treated samples. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized to investigate the corrosion resistance of the epoxy nanocomposites for different immersion times in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The adhesion strengths of the coatings were measured before and after 120 days of immersion in the corrosive electrolyte using a pull-off test. The cathodic delamination (CD) of the painted samples was also investigated. Results showed that conversion coatings can significantly increase the corrosion resistance and adhesion strength of the epoxy coating on the steel, and also reduce the rate of CD in comparison with an untreated sample. The adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating on the Cr(III) pretreated samples were significantly greater than on the Cr(VI) sample. The increase in adhesion strength and corrosion resistance was more pronounced on the samples that were post-treated with Co(II) and Ni(II) chemical treatments. The cathodic disbonded areas of the Cr(III)–Co(II) and Cr(III)–Ni(II) post-treated samples were significantly lower than the Cr(III) and Cr(VI) pretreated samples. Results showed that Cr(III)-based conversion coatings can improve the anticorrosion performance and reduce CD compared with those with Cr(VI). Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The present work describes the design of nontoxic pyrazolidine bisphenol (PYBP)-based hydrophobic benzoxazine (PBz) matrices, in comparison with that of bisphenol-F-based benzoxazines, and investigates their efficiency toward corrosion protection on mild steel surfaces. The preliminary in vitro toxicity assay studies infer the nontoxic nature of PYBP. Data obtained from thermal and surface studies indicate that the PYBP-based PBzs possess higher thermal stability than those of bisphenol-F benzoxazines. Observations from SEM images suggest that the inherent hydrophobic nature was due to the formation of rough surfaces. The corrosion studies of the specimens were carried out using open-circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization. Among the mild steel specimens, coated with different benzoxazines, the poly(PYBP-oda)-coated specimen was found to be less aggressive toward corrosion showing 90% efficiency and charge transfer resistance (Rct) of 381 kΩ cm2. Thus, data obtained from different studies suggest that the PYBP-based benzoxazines can be used as a better coating material for steel and steel products against corrosion. SpécificationsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Full disclosure : My involvement in the coatings industry centers around the field of prepainted metals. These factory-applied coatings were always fascinating to me because metal coils of all types of substrate pedigrees could be unwound onto a paint line and all the
processes needed for painting completed in a matter of minutes. These processes went all the way from cleaning the surface to curing the paint, resulting in pristine coils waiting to be formed into parts for almost every market. Therefore, for purposes of this article, “factory applied” is defined as painted before forming, or prepainted.
Conversely, "field-applied" refers to painting after forming-regardless of the application method or painting location. Factory-applied painting was very different from what some call “the traditional” method of applying coatings, which involves forming the parts, putting them together, and then cleaning and painting the end product. This method of painting after parts are formed could be done in an immersion or spray painting section of a facility, outsourced to another company, or painted on location during construction.Note de contenu : - Prepaint coatings attributes
