The adhesion between these multilayered coating and the mild steel substrate was studied with the aid of a scratch testing technique. Observation of the worn surface of different multilayered coatings was performed with the aid of metallurgical microscopy. The same multilayered coatings were examined with FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Finally, the corrosion behavior of bare and multilayered coated mild steel in 0.1 M NaCl solution (pH = 5.5, T = 25°C) was studied.

Patchs de réparationIndex. décimale : 620.19 Autres matériaux Résumé : The concept of repairing damaged metallic structures with composite patches has found increasing use in aerospace and other structures. However, the application has been primarily to monolithic structures. The application to repair of sandwich structures has been limited. The testing at USA Air Force Academy, Colorado has shown that the concept can be effectively used to extend the crack growth life of sandwich structures.
In the present study, analytical techniques have been developed to compute stress intensity factors in sandwich structure with face sheet cracks and repaired with composite patches. A mathematical approach using complex variables is developed. The problem is formulated in terms of sandwich core interface shear stresses, and adhesive shear stresses between face sheets and repair patches. The problem is reduced to the solution of a set of integral equations. The equations are solved numerically and a software program is written to compute stress intensity factors in the cracked face sheets. A parametric study was carried out to study the influences of adhesive thickness and face sheet thickness on stress intensity factors. The analysis was verified with test data, generated at US Air Force Academy, Colorado, on sandwich panels with 7075-T6 aluminum face sheets and repaired with Glare patches. The test data showed panels with thin face sheets having longer crack growth life as compared to panels with thick face sheets.Note de contenu : - ANALYTICAL DEVELOPMENT : Formulation of the problem - Repair patch and face sheets interface shear stresses and displacements relationship - Displacements in cracked orthotropic face sheets - Displacements due to uniform applied stress - Stress intensity factors - Solution of integral equations

Entretien et réparationsIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Many advances have been made in composite technology over the last few decades. Today, composites are used in industries ranging from aerospace to consumer electronics, domestic appliances and industrial machining, construction and automotive, and marine and sports equipment.
Composites, by definition, are an engineered or naturally occurring combination of two or more materials with notably different physical or chemical properties that retain their own identity, in that they are still distinguishable, and not fully blended after they are bonded or cured. These combinations produce a new material that features its own unique and superior characteristics.
Man has been making composites for centuries. One of the earliest noted man-made composite materials included straw and mud combined to form bricks for building construction. Composite materials take advantage of the strengths and abilities of different materials. In the example of straw and mud bricks, the mud is an outstanding binding material, but on its own, it will not stand up to compression and force very well. Straw, on the other hand, can withstand compression without crumbling or breaking. The combination of the two becomes an ideal composite solution for building construction.Note de contenu : - Adhesives bring composites together

Pales d'éoliennesIndex. décimale : 620.19 Autres matériaux Résumé : Composite materials are ideal for producing lightweight blades with tremendous performance capabilities, yet their structural complexity raises a number of issues in terms of optimizing design and manufacturing methods. From a design and manufacturing standpoint, wind turbine blades have many similarities to helicopter rotorcraft blades and other aerospace structures. As the wind blade industry is working hard to improve manufacturing efficiency and address blade failure issues, wind turbine manufacturers have the unique opportunity to adapt and apply the best practices that have been developed and refined by the aerospace industry over several decades.
