Currently, the greatest hurdle that inhibits wider implementation of carbon fiber composites in transportation is the high cost of the fiber when compared to other candidate materials. As part of the United States Department of Energy's FreedomCAR initiative, significant research is being conducted to develop lower cost, high volume technologies for producing carbon fiber. This paper will highlight the on-going research in the area.
Through Department of Energy (DOE) sponsorship, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and its partners have been working with the Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC) to develop technologies that would enable the production of carbon fiber at 11.00-15.40 dollars per kilogram (5-7 dollars per pound). Achievement of this cost goal, would allow the introduction of carbon fiber based composites into a greater number of applications for future vehicles. The goal of lower cost carbon fiber has necessitated the development of both alternative precursors and more efficient production methods.
Alternative precursors under investigation include textile grade polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers and fibers from lignin-based feedstocks. Previously, as part of the research program, Hexcel Corporation developed the science necessary to allow textil grad PAN to be used as a precursor rather than typical carbon fiber grade precursors. Efforts are also underway to develop carbon fiber precursors from lignin-based feedstocks. ORNL and its partners are working on this effort with domestic pulp and paper producers and with current and future ethanol fuel producers. In terms of alternative production methods, ORNL has developed a microwave-based carbonization unit that can process pre-oxidized fiber at over 200 inches per minute. ORNL has also developed a new method of high speed oxidation and a nex method for precursor stabilization. Additionally, novel methods of activating carbon fiber surfaces are under development which allow atomic oxygen concentrations as high as 25-30 % to be achieved rather than the more typical 4-8 % achieved by the standard industrial ozone treatment.Note de contenu : - Background

With this in mind, the 11th Kunststoff-Dia(hr)log conference held by Akro-Plastic GmbH was devoted precisely to this topic. New compounds were also announced at the conference, such as an expansion of the engineering plastics portfolio. Note de contenu : - Shifting focus from the combustion engine to the battery

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An icephobic and superhydrophobic surface was made by the sputtering of fluoropolymer material (PTFE or Teflon®) on anodized aluminum alloys. The study of this superhydrophobic coating under atmospheric icing conditions showed a 3.5 times reduction of its ice adhesion strength. To evaluate the longevity of such coated surfaces and to assess their potential outdoor applications, their durability was studied after several icing/de-icing cycles. However, these coatings showed weak stability after several icing/de-icing cycles. Plasma argon pretreatment of the anodized aluminum surface was used before sputtering to increase adhesion strength between the anodized aluminum surface and Teflon-like coating. Ice adhesion and contact angle measurements of the pretreated Teflon-like coating indicated clearly that the instability was associated with the low cohesion strength of the Teflon-like film. In order to improve the cohesive strength of the coating, the input power of the discharge was increased during the sputtering process. XPS, SEM, and contact angle analyses showed that an increase in input power renders the Teflon-like coating more stable. The results of ice adhesion measurement showed low variation in ice adhesion strength on such surfaces after 15 icing/de-icing cycles. This coating also showed an excellent stability under UV irradiation and condensation.
