RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A composite computer model has been proposed for starve fed/flood fed mixing single screw extruders. The model for starve fed extrusion has been developed by combining a new FEM based melt conveying model with recently developed melting models. Mixing screw equipped with distributive toothed disc mixing element has been considered as an example for modeling. An extensive fully three-dimensional non-Newtonian FEM computations have been carried-out to simulate the melt flow in mixing elements. Screw pumping characteristics have been developed for the elements at various power law indices, and these have been implemented into the composite model of the process. Simulations have been performed for low density polyethylene (LDPE) at various operating conditions, both for starve fed and flood fed extrusion. Fill factor, pressure, temperature and melting profiles have been computed and verified experimentally. Note de contenu : - Modeling

Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The task of the solid conveying section is to collect the entering material and transfer it to the melt dominated sections. Therefore, its upstream interface is the hopper and its downstream interface is the section in which the first melting occurs. Beneath the hopper opening, the screw rotation collects and conveys the material forward. It is hereby assumed that the friction forces among the particles are higher than the transferring forces on the screw and barrel. For that reason commonly known models for describing the solid conveying in single screw extruders assume that the screw channel is always completely filled so that a plug flow occurs. At high screw speeds, however, these assumptions are no longer valid. To analyze and mathematically describe the solid conveying behavior at screw speeds up to 2000 rpm, simulations based on the Discrete Element Method have been executed in previous investigations. Based on this, a model for describing the solid conveying behavior was developed which enables a variation of general screw and hopper geometry parameters but neglects the backpressure that inhibits the solid movement. For that reason, further investigations based on the Discrete Element Method are presented in this paper, which enable a consideration of the backpressure and pressure build-up in the feeding zone. Astonishingly, at high screw speeds a low filling degree in the screw channel was observed which did not fulfill the expectations of an always fully filled channel due to a backpressure forced particle backlog. Based on the investigations, a mathematical model has been developed which now fully comprehends the effects occurring in the solid conveying section. The conducted simulations were subsequently validated by experimental investigations. Therefore, a test bench was designed which enables solid conveying analysis with adjustable backpressures. The results indicate a good agreement with the formulated model which now enables the calculation of solid conveying zones with consideration of the pressure build-up and filling degrees. Note de contenu : - MODÉLISATION NUMÉRIQUE : Mécanisme cinétique - Modèle d'écoulement

SolidesIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In a smooth barrel extruder, the throughput is generally dominated by the metering sections pumping ability. Within the feed zone, more granules can always be conveyed than can melt in the compression zone and be discharged in the metering zone. At high screw speeds, this effect will only occur if the granules flow quickly enough out of the hopper into the screw channel and this is fully filled. In this case, the solids throughput up to maximum screw speed shows an approximately linear relationship to the speed. These linear solids conveying characteristics necessitate constructional changes to the hopper opening. In this article, solids conveying processes with approximately linear conveying characteristics up to speeds of 2,000 min– 1 (peripheral velocities up to 3 m/s) are simulated with various feed hopper geometries. The simulations are carried out by means of DEM (Discrete Element Method) in which the granules are approximated by single spherical particles. From the simulation results, via dimensional analysis a model is derived for describing the throughput as a function of the geometry and process parameters of the solids feed zone.
Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The rapid development of polymer blends and nanocomposites has put forward new requirements for the mixing performance of extruders. In comparison with shear flow field, extensional flow field has been shown to have unique advantages in improving dispersive mixing performance and reducing energy consumption. However, building an extensional flow field in a conventional single-screw extruder remains challenging. In this work, a new mound-shaped extensional mixing element (M-EME) was designed based on the geometric characteristics of a sine curve. To investigate the effect of this M-EME on the mixing properties of a conventional single-screw extruder, a numerical simulation analysis of this M-EME was performed. The results showed that the proportion of the region with a mixing index greater than 0.55 in the M-EME was higher than 43 %, and that the highest mixing index of the M-EME reached around 0.9, confirming the dominance of the extensional flow field in the M-EME. Moreover, it was observed that the changes in amplitude and period of the sine function have no significant effect on the distribution of the mixing index. The findings from this work provide a viable way to generate extensional flow fields in conventional screw extruders.
