Corrosion inhibitors provide an indispensable function to protective coatings. The performance of a coating under corrosive conditions requires that corrosion inhibitors provide sustainable protection during the coatings warranty. The coating industry however is challenged to be more cognizant of the impact toxic metals have on human health and the environment. In response to the European Directive 1999/45/EC Advancement of Technical Progress (ATP) amendment 29 effective October 2005, products containing zinc oxide and zinc phosphate required hazardous label ing due to their marine toxicity. The growing pressure to replace zinc, barium, strontium and other heavy metals has shifted the coatings pendulum to more ecofriendly alternatives. This paper captures specific products reflecting the new paradigm of technologies based on heavy-metal free inorganic pigments as well as non-toxic organic corrosion inhibitors.

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study investigates the role of the polymeric binder on the properties and performance of an intumescent coating. Waterborne resins of different types (vinylic, acrylic, and styrene-acrylic) were incorporated in an intumescent paint formulation, and characterized extensively in terms of thermal degradation behavior, intumescence thickness, and thermal insulation. Thermal microscopy images of charred foam development provided further information on the particular performance of each type of coating upon heating. The best foam expansion and heat protection results were obtained with the vinyl binders. Rheological measurements showed a complex evolution of the viscoelastic characteristics of the materials with temperature. As an example, the vinyl binders unexpectedly hardened significantly after thermal degradation. The values of storage moduli obtained at the onset of foam blowing (melamine decomposition) were used to explain different intumescence expansion behaviors.

Revêtements -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : It is difficult to go through a whole day without coming in contact with foaming materials. The soap and tooth paste that we use in the morning and before sleep, the foamed polyurethane seat cushion of the sofa or car seat, or the foamed polystyrene take away boxes that fill our foods in the restaurants.
In above case, foams are desired to achieve the finishing or result that we need. However for paint manufacturers and applicants, in order to ensure a smooth and even final paint film, foaming will be one of the main tasks to overcome especially for those paints that are applied by brush and roller.
Thus additives like defoamer are needed to prevent the formation of bubble when liquid paint is subjected to external mechanical disturbance during application and production.Note de contenu : - FOAM
