It was shown that the extent of particle swelling and the hydroplasticisation of the alkali-swellable particles was affected by the polarity of the ‘hard’ comonomer. The effect of dissociated carboxylic groups on the increase in latex viscosity and on the lowering of its minimum film-forming temperature was much more pronounced in the case of the methyl methacrylate comonomer. The thickening of the latices with hydrophobe-modified ethylene oxide urethane (HEUR) associative thickeners was considerably affected by the hydrophobicity of the particles. Thickening with hydrophically-modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) thickeners depends predominantly on the excluded volume of swollen thickener particles. The influence of the hydrophobic styrene content was negligible. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Monomers - Thickeners - Standard polymerisation recipe

In this paper a few basic thickeners have been selected for study. We have demonstrated the effect of these rheological modifiers on the performance properties of point-of-sale colourant. Our evaluations demonstrate that Bentonite is most suited for the colourant formulation studied. Presently there is no universal thickener, which could be used as a ready aide to ail rheological related issues. Note de contenu : - Table 1. Formulation of white colourant

The mixtures comprised one of four HEURs that were synthesized with varying molecular weight polyethylene glycols (PEG 35 K, 20 K, 12 K, and 8 K) and end-capped with octadecyl hydrophobes, as well as one of two latexes (butyl acrylate/styrene [BA-Sty] and butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate [BA-MMA]) that each contained a small amount of methacrylic acid. The two experimental latexes represent compositions commonly used in commercial paint formulations. The polarity of the HEURs decreases as the PEG molecular weight decreases and the surface of the styrene containing latex is less polar than that containing methyl methacrylate. In all HEUR–latex mixtures, the latex polymer volume fraction was maintained constant at 0.25 which provides a dispersed component spatial crowdedness that represents a fully formulated paint. All latex–HEUR mixtures were stable at very low (i.e., below 0.10% by weight) HEUR levels. At critical concentrations dependent on the polarity of thickener and latex, flocculation was accompanied by syneresis for latex-thickener mixtures prepared with all HEURs except the one with the longest PEG spacer. Further increase of HEUR levels revealed another critical concentration above which the mixtures were stable. Effects of the latex polarity diminished for the mixtures prepared with more hydrophobic HEURs. Note de contenu : - HEUR C18-EO795 and latex mixtures

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Globally the trend is towards waterborne paints and paint industry is experiencing strong need of deriving maximum performance benefit through the interactions of the key building blocks of the formulations. The high PVC (pigment volume concentration) waterborne paints are very important in Indian context and thus needs more attention for the researchers and business equally. In typical high PVC waterborne paint the end performances are governed by the surface interactions of inorganic fillers and surfactant molecules causing various morphologies, surface conditioning and particle packing. These parameters in turn have profound effect on the end performances of coatings which include self-stability, rheology, optical properties, flow and levelling and mechanical properties of the dried film.
In the present study, surfactants with varied molecular weights, functional groups, molecular arch itect and polarities are employed to understand the interactions with varied inorganic particulates commonly used in paint (carbonates, sulphates, silicates). The performance of the various experimental sets demonstrates the strong co-relation of the surfactant properties on the interactions with the inorganic particulates. Thus the trend analysis is useful tool for the formulator to strategize the composition for gain i ng maximum from the suitable interactions.Note de contenu : - OBJECTIVE
