Verre -- RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Films composed of nanoparticles have been commonly used in decorative applications due to their striking colors and useful self-cleaning properties. An efficient option for the structural coloration has been developed through fabrication of the thin films on substrates from SiO2 nanoparticles and PEI. The surface morphology and microstructure of SiO2/polyethyleneimine (PEI) film on glass substrate were analyzed with an SEM, AFM, and thickness analyzer. The homogeneous coatings of limited SiO2 aggregation with air voids were formed on glass substrates. It was strongly suggested that optical properties of the films came from the single-layer thin film interference effect. The structural colors of SiO2/PEI films were captured by digital camera, integrating sphere spectrophotometer and multi-angle spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the films illuminated distinctly as the thickness increased, and presented different lightness values and hues at various viewing angles. Moreover, those films with some surface roughness exhibited high water static contact angle, which endowed the films potential hydrophilicity and self-cleaning property. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Universal colourants are commonly used in point-of-sale tinting, covering the full paint selection, from including masonry paints. However, universal colourants are not always the preferred option from a technical point-of-view. Therefore special colourants are needed, such as façade colourants, which address the technical requirements of these paints. Additionally, decorative paints can be produced in a nearly unlimited number of colours. In special applications, such as in masonry paints, the colour area has so far been mainly limited to earthy colours because of the use of traditional pigments. New colourant developments are widening the colour area significaltly thus offering brighter cleaner shades for masonry applications with technical limitations. Note de contenu : - Masonry paints

Stabilité au stockageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The coatings sector has a limited range of renewable and sustainable raw mate-rials to choose from. To meet consumer expectations and legal requirements, alternatives are needed that ensure sustainable use of resources. Today's sustainable alternatives often lag their synthetic counterparts in performance or price, but rapid progress is being made in the development of suitable substitutes. In the area of wax additives, sustainable solutions are available. Here, we compare their property profiles with those of fossil products Note de contenu : - What is wax ?

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The handling of sticky raw material can cause problems during operation of process equipment in the cement production industry. These handling problems are generally observed when raw material (e.g., wet clay) sticks to machine walls and causes blockage of outlets. This leads to frequent production shutdowns and expensive cleaning operations. In this work, the effects of surface material and process parameters on the friction forces between wet clay and surface were investigated. Various surface materials and clay impact speeds were investigated. The results demonstrate that not only the equipment surface material but also the surface roughness influences the observed frictional behavior. The ranking of the materials in terms of effective static friction coefficients fell in two groups with equal performance within the group: (1) Two Teflon-based coatings (Accofal 2G54 and Accolan LB), polished AISI 304 stainless steel, Matrox lining, and a polyurethane-based coating (best performing surfaces), (2) Mild steel, a silicone-based coating, and AISI 304 stainless steel (worst performing surfaces). However, the friction coefficients of the two groups only varied by a factor of two, suggesting that adhesion of wet clay to surfaces is difficult to avoid by the use of coatings. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wettability and bonding quality of exterior coatings on fast-growing wood surfaces were studied. Samples of air-dried flat-grained (tangential surface) and edge-grained (radial surface) pattern of jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) woods were used. Before application of exterior coatings, the surfaces of the lumber samples were sanded. To provide wood surfaces with various degrees of roughness, abrasive papers of 120, 240, and 360 grits were used for the surface preparation. The wettability of two exterior coatings (water-based acrylic and oil-based alkyd varnishes) on the sanded wood surfaces was measured using a sessile drop contact angle method. The Shi and Gardner (S/G) model was used to evaluate and compare the wettability of the surface coatings on the wood. The sanded wood samples were coated with the two coatings (two layers each). Bonding quality of the coating layers was measured using a crosscut tape test method. Experimental results show that constant contact angle change rate (K value) of the S/G model decreased as the grit number of abrasive paper increased. This indicates that the wettability decreased as the roughness of the surface decreased (surface becomes smoother). There was no evidence of differences in wettability between tangential and radial wood surfaces. The oil-based alkyd coating generated better wettability compared to the water-based acrylic. The crosscut tests showed that the bonding quality of the coating films on both jabon and sengon wood decreased as the surface became smoother. The sengon wood compared to jabon wood provided better coating wettability and bonding quality. Wettability in terms of the K values was a good indication for determining the bonding quality of the two varnish layers.
