Other parameters, such as the aluminum-alloy, the aluminum surface treatment, and the pigmentation were varied too. It was found that two factors have a great influence on Ï„. One is the presence of an appropriate pigmentation of the paint. In some cases, nonpigmented paints led to very poor Ï„ values. Under industrial conditions, Ï„ values were generally high, exceeding 14 MPa. In some cases, the values for Ï„ can be interpreted in terms of AlOxHy-particles, which precipitate in the CDP after cathodic corrosion of aluminum in the course of the CDP-process. Rz increases in the order of the paints No. 3<2<<1<4. The paint system determines the strongest effect. But the surface treatment mode has no influence. The aluminum-corrosion products seem not to play any role. These findings point ot specific effects of the viscous behavior of the paint system in the course of baking procedure and/or the influence of the pigments at the surface Note de contenu : - The electrocoating process

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this paper, we present a combined morphological and optical characterization of aluminum-coated thermoplastic polymer surfaces. Flat plastic substrates, obtained by means of an injection molding process starting from plastic granules, were coated with ultra-thin aluminum films evaporated in vacuo, on top of which a silicon-based protective layer was plasma deposited in order to prevent oxidation of the metal reflective surface. Different sample treatments were studied to unravel the influence of substrate chemistry, substrate thickness, aluminum and protective layer thickness, and surface roughness on the actual optical reflectance properties. Bidirectional reflectance distribution function measurements, corroborated by surface morphological information obtained by means of atomic force microscopy, correlate reflectance characteristics with the root-mean-square surface roughness, providing evidence for the role of the substrate and the thin films’ morphology. The results unravel information of interest within many applicative fields involving metal coating processes of plastic substrates as an example in the case of automotive lighting. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) constitute an organic nanomaterial widely studied in polymer composites for its reinforcing effect. In this study, CNC was used to enhance the performance of a UV curable high-solid content coating system intended for indoor environments. The CNC surface was modified by a cationic surfactant since the coating system was hydrophobic resin-based requiring hydrophobic nanomaterial reinforcement. Modified CNC was mixed with the coating system using a high-speed mixer and the ultrasonication technique. Mechanical, thermal and morphological properties and curing behavior of the newly developed UV-curing coatings were assessed. Inclusion of CNC in the coating increased the mechanical properties (hardness and reduced modulus) of the coating system to a large extent. Thermal stability of the coating system was also improved by CNC addition. The CNC did not affect the curing behavior of the coating, in contrast to most inorganic nanomaterials. The CNC dispersed well in the matrix at 1% loading. Results of this study show that CNC can be used successfully with high-solid content coating systems. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials

RugositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Urushi (oriental lacquer) is a natural material that forms thin films with excellent durability and water resistance. There are two methods for curing urushi: oxidative and thermal polymerizations. Urushi is mainly applied to wood; therefore, the oxidative polymerization method has mainly been used to cure it. Oxidative polymerization requires temperature and humidity control and takes a long time to fully cure urushi. Urushi mixed with pigments has poor coloration. In contrast, the use of a thermal polymerization reaction can achieve curing in a short time. In this study, we focused on the thermal curing reaction of urushi, formed 13 different colored urushi coating films, and investigated their properties and coloration. We observed that urushi coatings produced through thermal polymerization took less time to cure than those produced through oxidative polymerization, and that urushi coatings with better coloration and high water repellency were obtained. Vernis en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cellulose nanocrystals were mixed into an aqueous UV-cured coating formulation in order to improve the mechanical properties of the coating. One of the key aspects in the technology of nanocomposites remains the dispersion of the nanoparticles within the matrix. To quantify the dispersion, efficient methods of characterization are needed. In this study, a new characterization method based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) and backscattering of laser light (He–Ne 632.8 nm) is applied to characterize such nanocomposite coatings. The angular distribution of backscattered light intensity was approximated by Gaussian distribution, and its standard deviation was used for the surface roughness analyses. A strong correlation between surface nano-roughness of coatings and angular distribution (half-width of the angular spread) of backscattered laser light was found. This laser characterization is faster and may be done without direct contact over a wider surface than AFM and may give us an idea about mechanical properties of coatings. This method can advance our fundamental understanding of dispersion of the nanoparticles in coatings and could be of use in quality control in industry.
