Système de libération contrôlée (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Despite major advances in polymer chemistry, cotton still remains the principal textile component in the global pharmaceutical industry owing to its intrinsic strength, thermal stability, biocompatibility, and pleasant texture. Nevertheless, the hydrophilic nature of cotton requires the development of strategies for the incorporation of hydrophobic functional molecules into the fabric for controlled-release applications. To address this issue, we designed biodegradable crosslinked poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) coatings as reservoirs for the incorporation of small hydrophobic molecules and studied their release profiles under physiological conditions. Two PBAEs with different hydrophobic and degradation properties were prepared and crosslinked to cotton fabrics in the presence of azulene, which served as a model hydrophobic, active material. Optimization of the crosslinking process in terms of UV curing time and the amount of solvent revealed that curing time of 15 min using 0.5 mL of chloroform was the optimal crosslinking condition. The coatings were characterized by FTIR, XPS, and SEM as well as TGA and DSC analyses. Sustained release of azulene was observed, and there was a correlation between azulene delivery rates and the hydrophobicity of the coating. These results provide a potentially useful platform for the rational design of cotton-based controlled-release systems for bioactive molecule delivery applications. Sutures (chirurgie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biofilms are a critical health concern because of their ability to render tolerance and resistance against antimicrobials, which is especially challenging for surgical-site sterility and surgical wound recovery. Development of biofilm-inhibiting coatings on surgical devices could aid to limit biofilm formation at surgical site. In this context, two biofilm-inhibiting nanocomposite hydrophobic coating formulations, one with biocide and the other without biocide, were developed and deposited on various substrates such as glass, plastics, and surgical sutures, followed by biofilm inhibition evaluation. Encouraging results were obtained and reported earlier. In the present study, the biofilm-inhibiting action of coatings on surgical sutures was re-examined using a spot assay method by counting the colony-forming units. The long-term durability of the coated sutures with respect to varying temperature, humidity, inflammatory cytokines, and body fluid was studied, in order to validate their suitability for use in surgical accessories and biomedical devices. RTPCR test was carried out to look for downregulation of biofilm-forming genes. Cytotoxicity of the nanocomposite coatings was examined by carrying out an MTT assay. The downregulation of biofilm-forming genes and minimal cytotoxicity of the nanocomposite coatings further confirmed its viability for using on surgical sutures. Overall, the current study provides mechanistic insights and additional bactericidal effect of the hitherto demonstrated antibiofilm activity of the formulation. This study also establishes long-term durability of the coatings in terms of temperature, humidity, and exposure to plasma, enabling its use in surgical accessories to be commercialized in various settings.

Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface texture modification for reducing physical adherence of bacteria can be a critical alternative to conventional antimicrobials, especially in the case of surgical accessories. In the present study, a nanocomposite hydrophobic coating formulation exhibiting biofilm-inhibiting properties was developed. The formulation alone and in combination with a biocide (chitosan) was deposited by dip-coating on different substrates like cover glass slips, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) coupons, and surgical sutures made of polyglactin, nylon, and silk. The coated substrates were characterized for their roughness, wetting behavior, and surface morphology. Biofilm inhibition by the formulation when coated on various substrates was evaluated against multiple bacterial strains, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter baumannii sourced both from ATCC and clinical cases. The nanocomposite coatings were found to exhibit substantial biofilm inhibition against all tested bacterial strains. The biofilm inhibition property of the nanocomposite-coated polyglactin suture was found to be higher (59–67%) when compared with commercially available antibacterial sutures, whose percentage biofilm inhibition was found to be 43–48% when tested against clinical isolates of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and A. baumannii. TitaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nanocomposites involve the inclusion of one material into the layers of another material at a nanoscale level. Inspired by nature, nanocomposites material systems offer functionalities over their bulk forms which in some cases have evolved over millions of years. Here, thin film coatings have been fabricated by PVD sputtering, comprising a soft PTFE phase which is combined with a hard metallic NiTi phase. A series of coatings with PTFE ranging from 10 to 75 vol% have been prepared, and their surface energies and microstructures investigated. The surface energy of the nanocomposite films changes with the PTFE content, falling in the range between PTFE and NiTi with water contact angles between 80° and 102° for a thin film with 25 and 75 vol% of PTFE, respectively. Here, both TEM and EDX reveal PTFE forming along NiTi column boundaries. Coatings with PTFE content greater than 50 vol% failed due to a build-up of intrinsic stress. The degree of hybridization between NiTi and PTFE was found to be dependent on the PTFE layer thickness. SEM analysis of this coating reveals PTFE at the surface embedded within the NiTi matrix. PolydopamineIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We combine the active surface of polydopamine (PDA) with the biomimetic mineralization of CaCO3 to obtain the macroscopically continuous CaCO3 films under mild conditions. In this approach, the organic matrices were adhesive PDA coatings, which were dip-coated on silicon wafers by the self-polymerization of dopamine in an alkaline aqueous solution (pH 8.5). The inorganic layers were CaCO3 films, which were formed in a CaCl2 solution in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) via a CO2 diffusion method. During the biomimetic mineralization, amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) was formed on PDA matrices with the help of PAA, which, subsequently, was transformed into a flat continuous calcite film on the PDA matrices. As the mineralization time increased, a new layer of CaCO3 crystals was formed over the calcite and, as a result, led to continuous CaCO3 films with rough surfaces. The thicknesses of CaCO3 films can be controlled by tuning the mineralization time. Our approach may provide a simple, yet efficient way for the preparation of macroscopically continuous organic–inorganic composite CaCO3 films under mild conditions. Moreover, superhydrophobic surfaces can be successfully achieved via a hydrophobic modification of the rough CaCO3 films, which make them suitable candidates for a variety of superhydrophobic applications, such as self-cleaning surfaces or anticorrosion, antiadhesive coatings.
