PolyuréthanesIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Polyurethane sealants are typically based on polypropylene glycol (PPG) polyols and are used in a variety of general purpose applications, such as joint fillers, construction sealants and caulks. They are characterized by their good adhesion to a variety of substrates and by their ability to accommodate stress through viscous flow. Thus, polyurethane sealants perform well in gap-filling situations that require up to 25% movement capability. The principle competition for polyurethanes is silicone, which provides an even greater movement capability due to a highly elastic response to stress. This difference in performance is reflected by a significant commercial cost differential.
Recently, BASF Corp. introduced several new low monol polyether polyols that may alter this balance. The new polyols feature levels of unsaturation significantly lower than conventional PPG polyols, giving them a higher functionality. Improved functionality increases performance through the attainment of higher molecular weights during polyurethane formation. These new materials may be used by the sealant industry to bridge the performance "gap" between polyurethane sealants and silicones at a cost commensurate with this performance.

For instance, gasketing products suitable for flange sealing applications are deployed in engine construction and in the drive train generally. In addition to anaerobic-curing acrylates for high-rigidity flanges, RTV silicones and - a new development - polyacrylates that likewise cure at room temperature for sealing flexible flange connections are available. Nowadays products have to satisfy both performance specifications and increasingly sustainability criteria as well. Note de contenu : - Sealing rigid flange connections

Requirements such as hardness, elongation, resistance to dry and humid heat, and chemical resistance can be met when the correct monomers and oligomers are used. Cured photopolymer properties can be predictably manipulated by changing the backbone structures and molecular weight of the various components. Polyether-backboned monomers and oligomers showed the best overall performance and maintained that performance when exposed to both dry and humid conditions. Note de contenu : - Learning what works
