High chroma pearlescent pigments designed by optical simulation / Kiroyuki Shiomi in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 5, N° 4 (12/2008)

Pigments with higher chroma, color purity, and brightness are in high demand all over the world. In this study we developed a high chroma pearlescent pigment for powder foundation. To produce the high chroma pearlescent pigment, we have designed the layer structure of a pearlescent pigment using computer simulation. In the simulation we have considered its layer structure, the complex refractive indices of the layers, and the thickness distribution of a mica substrate that was measured with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The layer thicknesses have been optimized. The feature of this design is that iron oxide having selective light absorption has been adopted as the layer material to enhance certain wavelengths of the reflected light, which is one of the properties of high chroma. Thus, we have found that a mica substrate homogeneously coated with iron oxide which is further coated with colorless titanium dioxide has a high chroma compared to ordinary pearlescent pigments. The designed pigment has been synthesized by developing a novel manufacturing method to achieve a low roughness iron-oxide surface. We believe that this simulation is useful for designing other pearlescent pigments. Simulation, Méthode deIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The gonioapparent lightness of a metallic paint system depends strongly on the 3D microstructure of the platelet-containing basecoat layer, and on the platelet roughness. Current optical models which are used to simulate the paint’s appearance, however, ignore the multi-scale and multi-dimensional microstructural features, which limits their predictive power. Here, we describe a hybrid, ray-wave optics model for metallic paints. This model incorporates the ray-optics of the 3D platelet microstructure and the wave effects that result from the surface roughness of the platelets. This model is used to link the roughness to the reflection lobes of the aluminum platelets, and to the gonioapparent lightness of the paint system. Predicted lightness values from our model matched, at most viewing angles, measurements from physical paint samples. This model can be used to explore the effect of platelet surface roughness on the lightness of the complete paint system and predict the appearance of paints with different platelet microstructures. Système de pulvérisation (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Atomization plays a crucial role in spray coating processes. The liquid paint is broken up to small droplets and accelerated to the work piece. A conflict of goals is appearing here : a high quality of the layer requires usually a fine atomization, but small droplets can lead to enhanced overspray. Discussions regarding the use of other atomization gases than air shall be focused to a systematic base in this article. Note de contenu : - Goal of a perfect atomization

DOI : 10.3166/rcma.15.289-296 Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6136

For the purpose of simulating complex mechanical properties of materials, an application-oriented evaluation method and a viscoelastic materials model has been devised, with which it is possible to demonstrate the long-term performance of plastic parts over a wide load range in FEM simulations.
