PolycarbonatesIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The alignment of polymer chains is a well known microstructural evolution effect due to straining of polymers. This has a drastic influence on the macroscopic properties of the initially isotropic material. In this work, cold forming is performed at room temperature on a tensile testing machine. Polycarbonate films are examined in two loading phases. In the first phase, the specimen is loaded to induce anisotropy, and in the second, it is re-loaded, while the material direction is varied. The investigations are supported by an optical measurement system to gain knowledge about the inhomogeneous material behavior in the initial loading phase and about the anisotropic homogeneous behavior during the re-loading phase. Two dimensional strain contours are obtained from the test data. Additionally, we propose a method for approximation of the macroscopic true stress and compare the results with a common approach based on volume consistency. In the future, the test data will set a basis for parameter identification of constitutive equations taking into account a combination of inhomogenous and homogenous material behavior, exhibiting strain induced anisotropy. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Many processing operations of polymeric materials are dominated by extensional flow. In this paper the question is addressed in which way rheological data obtained from elongational laboratory experiments can be used to describe the material behavior in various processes. Particularly discussed is the uniformity of geometrical features of items with respect to the strain hardening of the polymeric materials, because uniformity is important for many end-use properties. Convincing correlations with extensional rheology could not be established for thermoforming experiments on polypropylene. However, for blown and drawn films it was found that the uniformity of thickness improved, if strain hardening was introduced. The bubble stability could be related to the melt strength of the sample. Furthermore, the influences of elasticity and strain hardening on the neck-in during drawing of films were elucidated. Moreover, it was shown in which way extensional rheology can be used to assess foaming. Note de contenu : - Main features of rheological properties in elongation

Soja et constituantsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A biodegradable alternative material to synthetic plastics was explored in this study through the extrusion of soy protein isolate (SPI) composite films containing soy cellulose microfibers (SMF). SMF were isolated from soy pods and stems using a chemo-mechanical method. The fibers produced through successive treatments were characterized by microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. SMF/SPI composite films (0.08 to 0.3 mm thick), containing different concentrations of cellulose fibers, were produced using a single-screw extruder (0.625? screw; 24 : 1 L/D ratio; 100 – 120 min?1; 120 to 150 °C barrel temperature) and characterized. Homogenous films with uniform distribution of SMF were obtained with the highest concentration of 0.5 % w/w SMF/SPI. Increasing fiber content resulted in the formation of aggregates. As with other protein films, mechanical properties of the extruded pristine SPI and composite films were negatively affected by humidity. At the optimal concentration of 0.25 % w/w SMF/SPI, films exhibited improved mechanical performance at elevated relative humidity (84 %) when compared to the pristine SPI films.
