Sustainable steel bridge maintenance in JOURNAL OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS & LININGS (JPCL), Vol. 34, N° 8 (08/2017)
[article]
Titre : Sustainable steel bridge maintenance : The role of paint in a life-cycle assessment Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 38-48 Note générale : Bibliogr.

The authors discuss a study to test this contention, quantifying the effect of coating systems of varying durability (and hence varying maintenance requirements) on the environmental impact of a steel bridge over the course of its functional life. Then, the ET was applied to the tanning process and the ET tanning approach optimized and evaluated. The result indicated that after tanning with 8% ET at pH 6 for 6 h, the shrinkage temperature of leather was 83.9°C and the thickness change rate was 97.5%. The XRD, DSC, TG, SEM and Zeta potential analyses demonstrated that ET could couple with the amino groups of the collagen side chains and breaking partial hydrogen bonds between fibers, brought significant improvement to the softness of leather without obvious damage to the high-level structure of collagen. Residual Cl- concentration in the wastewater
decreased 42.1% in the tanning process compared to the conventional chrome tanning method. The emissions of COD and TDS in the tanning process reduced by 40.5% and 27.2%, respectively. It is conceivable that the ET tanning approach provides an improved approach to promote leather industry to develop sustainably.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials and equipment - Preparation of polyether amine triazine derivatives (ET) - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) - Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) - Leather tanning processing - Determination of the shrinkage temperature - Determination of the exhaustion rate of tanning agent - Determination of the percent thickness increase - Thermal analysis - Zeta potential analyses - Morphological analyses - Whiteness analysis - X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement - Determination of physical and mechanical properties - Environmental impact assessment

In this paper, a bag made of leather was taken as a case study. A sustainability assessment methodology, given the major concern on carbon footprint (CF) and environmental risk assessment (ERA), were combined to derive complementaty criteria for the ecodesign of leather products, thus the effect of ecological properties of leather on finished products were analyzed. It was concluded that the key to leather product ecodesign is to choose leather.
Leather's ecological properties directly determine their values of carbon footprint and environmental risk assessment. It was shown that, the process, clean-energy usage and the waste disposal have impacts on carbon footprint. Different countries and processes resulted in great gaps in leather's carbon footprint. Banned azo colorants have the most carcinogenic risk amongst the hazardous compounds used in the leather industry. Thus, the leather is crucial in the process of ecodesign for leather products, the ecological criteria and supplier selection are rigorous.
On the premise of aesthetic design, the perspective provided by the indicators of different nature was balanced to accomplish a fair evaluation. The selection of leather produced under sustainable criteria and the reduction of the materials consumption was recommended, since the area requirements would be minimized and the absence of hazardous compounds would ensure safety conditions during the use stage.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Case study - Carbon footprint - Environmental risk assessment

Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : In recent years, bio-based alkanes obtained from vegetable ails or sugar, respectively by processes of conventional chemistry and by synthetic biology implemented from genetically modified microorganisms, have appeared on the market. An examination of the production yields and the results of lifecycle analyses highlight the great superiority of conventional chemistry compared to synthetic biology, which ultimately proves to be of low productivity and high environmental impact, far from being in phase with the societal and environmental requirements of the cosmetics industry.
