One coating was a conventional primer high-gloss (HG) polyurethane topcoat, and the other was a single ‘self-priming’ (SP) polyurethane coating. Both coating surfaces oxidised from the exposure, but the coating bulk remained intact. Cracks developed in the ‘self-priming’ coating surface, but it remained adhering. The other topcoat showed good weathering resistance, but its primer lost adhesion after exposure. Both coatings initially developed nanoblisters, then increasing surface roughness. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed similar corrosion-protective properties during much of the exposure. Evidently, electrochemical measurements alone are not sufficient to monitor deterioration in corrosion-protective coatings. Note de contenu : - Sample preparations

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface properties of a polymeric coating system have a strong influence on its performance and service life. However, the surface of a polymer coating may have different chemical, physical, and mechanical properties from the bulk. In order to monitor the coating property changes with environmental exposures from the early stages of degradation, nondestructive techniques with the ability to characterize surface properties with micro- to nanoscale spatial resolution are required. In this article, atomic force microscopy has been applied to study surface microstructure and morphological changes during degradation in polymer coatings. Additionally, the use of AFM with a controlled tip-sample environment to study nanochemical heterogeneity and the application of nanoindentation to characterize mechanical properties of coatings surfaces are demonstrated. The results obtained from these nanometer characterization techniques will provide a better understanding of the degradation mechanisms and a fundamental basis for predicting the service life of polymer coatings.
Projection au plasmaIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, Al2O3 films with an Ni-based buffer layer were prepared on a Cu substrate by plasma-ion assisted deposition (PIAD). The main purpose of this study is to develop a novel electrical insulating film to be used at high temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra show the Al2O3 films prepared by this method are amorphous. The results of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analyses reveal that the Al2O3 films perfectly adhere to the substrate through the buffer layer, no visible defects were observed, and no impurity from Ni or Cu was detected. The diffusion of Cu into the Al2O3 film at high temperature is suppressed. Al2O3 films with an Ni-based buffer layer exhibit excellent resistivity (>1010Ω·cm) even after experiencing a high temperature environment as high as 600°C 10 times.
Protection thermique
Silicones -- Suppression ou remplacementIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The application of heat in hair styling is a common practice in use today. Thermal styling appliances can reach until 232°C, thereby,
the heat protection is essential for any hair care routine to avoid alteration in the cuticle structure, decomposition of keratin, water loss and hair breakage. This study aimed to develop a thermal protective ingredient based on polysaccharides of Salvia hispanica and trehalose, associated with ethyl esters of sunflower and crambe oils that can be used as a silicone alternative with proven efficacy and safety : ThermoShield N. To evaluate the efficacy, after flat iron exposure, four groups of hair tresses (Control, Placebo, ThermoShield N and Benchmark) were investigated using thermal images, moisture analyzer, AFM and SEM. The results showed that the ThermoShield N provided a significantly reduction in the hair temperature and an increase in hair water content, compared to Placebo and Benchmark. The AFM and SEM micrographs of the fibers treated with ThermoShield N did not shbw the same signs of damages observed in the Control group. In the experimental conditions the results showed that ThermoShield N is able to trap water inside the fibers and creating a thermal barrier, that protects hair from overheating and consequently, from thermal damage.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Hair sample preparation - Hair temperature - Evaluation of the hair water content (hydration) - Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) - Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) - Fiber orientation (straight effect)
