Two different types of carbon filler (i.e., CNT and CB) were adopted to study the efficacy of different carbon fillers in improving the σ of PP/carbon microparts. In general, the σ of 0.85 mm thickness microparts were higher than the 0.50 mm thickness microparts, regardless of the carbon filler type and testing directions. This suggested that higher shearing conditions that prevailed in the microinjection molding (μIM) process were unfavorable for the formation of intact conductive pathways in corresponding moldings, albeit the distribution of carbon fillers turned better with increasing shear rates, as confirmed by morphology observations. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that prior thermomechanical histories (including melt blending and μIM) experienced by the polymer melts had an influence on the thermal behavior of subsequent moldings. Also, there existed a strong shear flow-induced crystallization of polymer chains during μIM because the crystallinity of microparts was higher than that of feed materials. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the synthesized HNT revealed that many of the nanotubes were tubular; however, spherical and semi-spherical, platy and semi rolled structures were also observed. Fire retardant EPDM compounds composed of typical flame retardants (FR), deca-bromo diphenyl oxide (DBDPO), antimony oxide (Sb2O3), talc and carbon black were prepared. Three elastomer compounds, with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% of synthesized HNT, and one more compound with 10 wt.% of synthesized HNT and 10 wt.% of conventional flame retardants were prepared and formed by a two roll mill. A TEM micrograph was presented to prove the well dispersion of HNT in polymer matrix. The flammability, thermal stability and tensile strength of the compounds were compared to that of typical fire retarded EPDM. The results showed that the typical flame retardants diminish the tensile strength and elongation at break of EPDM elastomers; in addition, these compounds showed the lowest thermal stability among the typical formulations. The extent of flammability of the compounds was characterized using the cone calorimetry technique. The compound containing 5 wt.% HNT showed the highest tensile strength, the least flammability and the highest thermal stability compared to the other compounds. This was related to the good dispersion and also on the tubular structure of the synthesized nanotubes. The peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) as well as the amount of hazardous gas emission for the sample having the highest mechanical response was smaller than those with conventional micro-filler flame retardants.
In this work, we describe the development of LbL films based on polyaniline (PANI), titanate nanotubes (TiNTs-Na2Ti3O7), and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) for applications in antifungal coatings. The LbL films were characterized by spectroscopy in the UV–visible region, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Among various films architectures tested, the PANI(TiNTs)/CTAB film was more promising for the suggested applications. This film showed excellent activity against Cryptococcus neoformans fungi, showing inhibition zones. The material developed in this work is a candidate for coating of air conditioning pipes, for instance, since besides the antifungal activity, it also adds the anticorrosive and air-purifying properties present in PANI and TiNTs. During these last years, a change about research and development of carbon materials has been observed which is based on the increasing role played by the surface properties compared to the bulk ones. It appears indeed that the new forms of carbon recently discovered, as fullerenes and nanotubes, have lead to new research fields as for exemple in molecular chemistry and nanotechnology.
