RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The process of dispersing filler in polymer matrix is vital to the behavior of polymer composites. The current study involves understanding the extent of dispersion of filler by only varying the nature of mixing during the process. Identical polymer composite materials are processed via two different kinds of mixing sections on the screw in a twin-screw extruder, differing in the type and amount of stress they impose on the filler agglomerate. An aggressive (900) Kneading Block (KB) mixing section is compared with recently developed Extensional Mixing Elements (EMEs), which impart extension dominated mixing while KB imparts shear dominated mixing. Various EME geometries of different levels of aggressiveness were computationally studied and validated. Composites obtained from KB are compared with composites processed using five different EME geometries. Three composites of Polypropylene (PP) filled with carbon black, graphene nano platelets and carbon nanotubes were studied independently. Composites processed through EMEs display about an order of magnitude better dispersion of filler agglomerate over the composites processed through KB. In addition, enhanced modulus and yield stress is observed for composites processed through EMEs. An improvement of 63% to 266% in the strain achieved for EME processed composites is seen under biaxial film stretching. Its admixing at 5 wt% enhances latex paint flame-retardancy and did not change paint color, surface roughness and adhesion to the substrate. Tested according to the ASTM E84 standard, 5 wt% halloysite doping was the best formulation evaluated on the flame spread and smoke developed. Halloysite decomposition resulting in degradation and release of water molecule is believed to be a reason for the decreasing rate of combustion. In order to achieve some optimum key properties such as high and broadband microwave absorbing properties, low density, and relatively low cost, a gradient structure and alternating multilayer structure are used simultaneously. The effect of a single layer containing one type of filler, single layer containing several types of fillers, and multilayer structures on mentioned key parameters are investigated. The electromagnetic parameters and the reflection loss (RL) versus frequency of samples were tested by network analyzer in the range of 2–18 GHz using the transmission/reflection method. As a final result, the multilayer MACs included nine layers in which each of the layers contained one type of the fillers (CNT, CI, and SiC) and three neat resin interlayers 2 mm in total thickness compared to other samples and provided a maximum return loss value of 17.6 dB at 08.50 GHz and an absorption bandwidth (RL < − 5 dB) of 16 GHz (2–18 GHz) with a density of 1.61 g/cm3. So, it is simply possible to obtain an efficient MAC due to suitable microwave absorbing filler distribution in multilayer coatings for any respective application.
