Currently, many approaches are being offered to help reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) in industrial coatings. The use of reactive diluent chemistries has proven to be a viable concept in meeting current VOC compliance mandates. As newer regulations limit VOC more severely, more effective reactive diluents will be essential to meet the lower VOC requirements. A new class of ultra-low viscosity oxazolidine-based reactive diluents has been found which demonstrates excellent reactivity while also improving coating performance. As a result of this development, current solvent-borne industrial urethane coating technology can be made to meet the new VOC regulations as well as offering an effective solution toward compliance of any future mandated VOC levels. TalcIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Durability and resistance requirements of paints and coatings are constantly increasing, but at the same time paints need to be environment friendly and safe for consumers. Talc is a natural minerai with a theoretical formula of Mg3Si4010(OH)2. Talc is the second most used extender in paints and coatings worldwide (after calcium carbonate). It is hydrophobic, inert and non-toxic.
ELEMENTIS offers three different talc familles: FINNTALC, PLUSTALC and MICROTALC. They all are high quality pure talc grades with lamellar particle form. FINNTALC grades are based on Finnish talc ore and they are purified by a flotation process that ensures high and constant product quality. PLUSTALC and MICROTALC grades are based on high quality, high whiteness talc ore and are targeted towards paints where super high whiteness is needed.
FINNTALC grades give well-balanced optical paint properties with excellent wet-scrub and stain resistance, and are efficient matting agents. The platy structure improves mud-cracking resistance and adhesion, and barrier properties. FINNTALC grades are also preferred extenders for paints using tinting systems, due to robust colour consistency.Note de contenu : - Fig. 1 : Wet-scrub resistance of high PVC paint

The system selected for this work was a two-pack polyurethane acrylate with polyester polyol as the main component and urethane monoacrylate (UMA) as hardener. The polyester polyol was synthesized in a way to provide a final film coating containing both a suitable flexibility and high surface hardness. The thermal and photochemical curing behavior of the resin was studied via the chemorheology technique and the real-time FTIR. The Boltzmann sigmoidal model was implemented and well-fitted to the data obtained from the chemorheology measurements. The comparison between two reactive diluents, butanediol diacrylate (BDDA) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) showed that BDDA reacts faster than TMPTA in the thermal curing condition. Nevertheless, the network buildup is stronger when TMPTA is used. The photopolymerization is also faster for the case of TMPTA. However, its final double bond conversion is restricted to a lower amount due to steric hindrance and higher viscosity of the system. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article elucidates the effect of type of pigment/extenders viz. titanium dioxide (TiO2), magnesium silicate (steatite), calcium carbonate, dolomite, precipitated sodium magnesium aluminosilicates, hydrated and calcined aluminum silicates (kaolin) when used alone or in combination in the paint dispersions on their sedimentation stability. Accelerated heat age stability test was conducted as per ASTM D 1849. Wettability of pigment extenders were measured in terms of their contact angle using Washburn technique. Rheology viscosity curve and oscillatory amplitude sweep test are carried out to depict the structural properties, more precisely the extent of flocculation in the paint dispersion. From rheology viscosity curve, extent of residual flocculation is determined using Asbeck extrapolation method. Extent of total flocculation in the paint dispersion is estimated from cohesive energy density (Ec) using oscillatory amplitude sweep test. Energy of separation of particles in flocs (Esep) is also determined using yield point measurement. Attempt was made to correlate extent of flocculation present in paint dispersion with settling and syneresis observed during accelerated heat age stability test. It is observed that, the paint dispersions based on only TiO2, only hydrous kaolin and only precipitated sodium magnesium aluminosilicates are found to be quite stable whereas the dispersions based on only magnesium silicates and only calcined kaolin are found to be unstable. Paint dispersions based on carbonate extenders show syneresis and soft settling which is easily mixable. From the rheological study, it is identified that Ec is the most crucial parameter that correlates very well with the accelerated heat age stability test results of paint dispersion.
