UréeIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Urea is the most applied nitrogenous fertilizer with 46% nitrogen (N) among available synthetic fertilizers. On the other hand, uncoated urea is subjected toward quick nutrient loss due to its higher solubility. This problematic issue could be addressed by applying slow-release fertilizer. The main aim behind this research was to model and simulate the nutrient release pattern from coated urea using zinc oxide (ZnO) as a micronutrient Zn source. A multidiffusional model was adopted for the simulation of prill fertilizer. During this study, finite element method and 2D geometry were utilized for prilled urea fertilizer using COMSOL multiphysics software. The second phase consisted of release kinetic study by using the experimental release data. In the present research, synergism was observed between the simulation and experimental results of nutrient release, with an error of 0.041. The dissolution curves of urea for simulation and experimental studies followed sigmoidal behavior. The results findings indicated that a second-order equation could be used to express the nutrient release from Zn coatings (ZnO or ZnO-NPs). Second-order kinetics express that nutrient release from Zn-coated urea was controlled by diffusion. Additionally, the second-order kinetic constant increases with raise in coating percentages which enhanced the mass transfer resistance.
ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The wear properties of a textured polyester powder coating with pyrogenic silica nanoparticles addition were evaluated. Raw powders of a commercial, textured polyester organic coating were mixed with low amounts of SiO2 nanoparticles (0.5–3 wt%) using ball milling, a simple and economical method. Nanoparticles were mixed into the powder of thermoset organic coating for 10 min in a two-body planetary ball mill. Particle size distribution of the powder was measured to evaluate the milling effect. The coatings were applied and cured in an industrial installation on aluminum substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the coatings were taken to analyze the homogeneity of the organic coating. Roughness, gloss and color were measured in order to evaluate their appearance. The effect of nanoparticles on abrasive and erosion wear performances was measured. Pin-on-disk wear tests were carried out. Erosion measurements were performed with free fall of sand on the samples, a test based on ASTM D968 standard. The results showed that the milling process provides a good distribution of nanoparticles as no agglomerates were found. The addition of 0.5 wt% silica nanoparticles allows for improvement of the wear resistance of the coatings.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A nanohybrid waterborne binder was synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization with the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles in order to increase the corrosion protection capability. This system was compared to a neat waterborne binder and to a physical blend of the binder with an aqueous ZnO nanoparticles dispersion. The hybrid dispersion was characterized by SEM and TEM, while the corrosion behavior of these latexes was investigated by electrochemical measurements (open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution), evaluating the effect of the incorporation of these nanoparticles into the polymeric matrix. The incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles by blending showed similar behavior to the neat coating despite flash rust reduction on the metal surface. In contrast, the hybrid binder prepared by miniemulsion polymerization has shown the best performance according to the values of pore resistance (Ri) and coating capacitance (Cc). In general, this study shows how useful can be the miniemulsion polymerization methodology to design hybrid coating formulations, obtaining homogenous distribution of ZnO nanoparticles within the film. Indeed, a heterogeneous distribution can hinder the effectiveness and the corrosion protection capabilities of promising nanoparticles.

Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coating plywood with intumescent paint is an effective approach to ensure fire safety in materials. This study investigated the effects of applying an intumescent coating with nanoclay and different amounts of Cloisite 15A (1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%) on 4-mm plywood panels. The nanoclay coating had a lower total heat release and peak heat release rate than other approaches, and it significantly enhanced the fire retardancy of painted plywood. In addition, nanoclay treated with an organic modifier has better flame retardancy than unmodified nanoclay. Another critical parameter in this study was the concentration of organoclay added to the intumescent coating. Cloisite 15A at a concentration of 1% further enhanced the fire retardancy of plywood. A higher organoclay concentration can reduce CO emissions ; however, it also increases CO2 emissions during combustion. The intumescent char layers containing 1% and 3% organoclay had the most extensive phosphocarbonaceous structures according to Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy and 27Al and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. Regarding the mechanism of fire performance and CO/CO2 emissions, the addition of 1% and 3% Cloisite 15A to intumescent coatings is recommended; it achieved superior performance to Cloisite 15A at a higher concentration (i.e., 10%). Three different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (0%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) were evaluated. The nanoparticles were characterized by means of the transmission electron microscopy and an X-ray diffractometer. The varnish prepared was evaluated for its viscosity, adhesion of the film to the wood, water absorption, and the effects of natural weathering on the color and quality of the varnish. It was found that viscosity decreases as the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles increases, while no variation was found in the thickness of the film. Except for Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis, the adhesion was not statistically affected. It was found that, in the 9 species tested, incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles decreased the values of water absorption. The evaluation of natural weathering showed that the varnish with no added TiO2 nanoparticles degraded completely after 1 year of weathering exposure, while the modified varnish film endured. Less color change was observed in lumber treated with the varnish containing TiO2 nanoparticles. The best performance of the varnish in the nine tropical woods used was observed when TiO2 nanoparticles were added at 1.5% concentration.
