Van der Waals, Forces deIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Capillary pressure force and direct surface tension force are known to be sufficient though probably not necessary to drive the compaction stage of latex film formation. There is abundant evidence that van der Waals force can draw particles together progressively more around the perimeters of interparticle contacts, but their role in compaction remains unanswered. With the powerful technique of high-resolution cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), together with fast-freezing and freeze-drying followed by controlled annealing at temperatures below and around the nominal glass transition temperature, we have documented the role of van der Waals force in film formation in the water-free condition, i.e., with capillary pressure and surface tension forces absent. Results of imaging the freeze-dried and annealed coatings are fully consistent with the hypothesis that van der Waals force alone can compact a latex coating. The rate at which particles flatten and thus the coating compacts by annealing increases, as expected, with temperature and time. The results of rewetting tests of coatings annealed at various temperatures demonstrate that compacted coating is not necessarily coalesced, and that even full compaction of solid particles can be elastic, hence reversible, rather than viscoelastic or viscoplastic. Some of the results suggest that soluble ionic surfactant and oligomeric and grafted polymeric stabilizers at particle surfaces, collapse to undetectable dimensions during freeze-drying, yet reswell to detectable size during rewetting, if they have not dissolved into polymer particles during. During production of technical parts subjected to high loads, varying amounts of residual moisture in the material cause a decrease in important mechanical properties. A drying system with automatic temperature and dew point leveling, combined with control of the air flow, addresses this issue. Extraction par micro-ondes
SéchageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Summarized in this article is the substantial research and technology on applications of microwave in leather industry for effectively utilizing microwave in leather making. It includes effluent disposal, pretreatment for analysis, chemicals synthesis, leather drying and wet end processing. Also, the future studies based on microwave-assisted leather manufacturing are put forward. Microwave could shorten sludge drying time, indicating the use of microwave in leather effluents disposal could give a potential method for minimizing pollution. As an efficient pretreatment method, microwave assisting digestion and extraction could be used for the leather routine and hazard materials detection without any negative effect. In leather chemicals synthesis, faster reaction rate with better products could be obtained under microwave, suggesting it could be used in the processes further. Leather drying with microwave had advantages of fast drying such as uniform water distribution and higher area yield without hardening and shrinking. Furthermore, microwave in leather dyeing and tanning could improve the color fastness and hydrothermal stability of the leather. These studies demonstrated microwave was not only an excellent heat resource but also has a special non-thermal effect in leather making, which had some positive influences on the processes and leather properties. It is necessary to study the function and mechanism of microwave in leather making and the influence of microwave on leather properties and structure, especially non-thermal effect in the processes. This will give a potential choice for innovating leather technology, improving leather performance and promoting efficient. In summary, microwave introduced in leather industry will be an important further research field for leather chemists and technologists. SéchageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Environmental regulations are forcing the reformulation of many decorative and protective coatings systems. In particular, air-drying solventborne alkyd paints need to meet increasingly stringent emission limits and often must be reformulated with suitable exempt solvents or reactive diluents to achieve volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction. In the research summarized in this article, a new reactive diluent, tetra(2,7-octadienyl) titanate, was synthesized and evaluated in alkyd formulations for VOC reduction and property enhancement. A soy-based long-oil alkyd resin; a soy-based high-solids, long-oil alkyd resin; and a linseed-based, high-solids long-oil alkyd resin were evaluated in combination with the new reactive diluent at weight percentages ranging from 10% to 50%. Characterization included measuring viscosity, film dry times, and film performance of the reactive diluent formulations in comparison to neat alkyd resins used as control. The tetra(2,7-octadienyl) titanate formulations consistently exhibited reduced viscosities and dry times as a function of concentration. The resulting films were harder and more thoroughly cured than the control systems.
