The nanofiller was revealed by X-ray diffraction to have an amorphous morphology, showed a narrow particle size distribution with a volume mean diameter of 1.2 µm and indicated a specific surface area of 228 m2/g. Clear films prepared with the nanofiller had significantly improved wettability compared to a blank film. The results of outdoor exposure tests exhibited that multicolored films with the nanofiller showed higher antifouling ability than films with a commercially available silica filler. A proposed antifouling mechanism is that the proportion of Si-OH and Al-OH active sites exposed on the nanofiller surface had a significant effect on the surface wettability of the films and exquisitely controlled the sliding of rain droplets.

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water droplets or films which are formed according to surface wettability show different effects on surface transparency. The effects of surface wettability on transparency in different water conditions are worth investigating because the surface usually suffers from the variable environmental water conditions. Herein, superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, with negligible differences of physical structure but great differences of chemical composition, are used to investigate for the first time the relationship between surface wettability and transparency in four water conditions, including ambient condition, liquid water, boiling water steam, and ambient conditions after freezing at −4°C for 1 week. The transparency of the superhydrophobic surface is only about 5% lower in 550 nm light wavelength than that of the superhydrophilic surface in ambient conditions, but it is about 24% lower than that of the superhydrophilic surface in liquid water. When the surfaces are exposed to boiling water steam and ambient conditions after freezing at −4°C for 1 week, the superhydrophobic surface also shows lower transparency than the superhydrophilic surface because of increased fogging. However, the transparency shows little difference when the fog evaporates completely. The relationship revealed between surface wettability and transparency in different water conditions will be beneficial in choosing suitable wettability surfaces to satisfy the needed transparency in actual applications. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Many earlier studies have shown a general relation between the surface properties of wood and coating performance. However, because of the multitude of chemical and physical interactions, and the effect of the surface structure on its wettability as well as on the penetration, the adhesion and durability of a coating may be different depending on the specific combination of wood species and coating materials. Important analogous findings are also knwons from wood bonding. Note de contenu : - Finishing options examined

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Graphene oxide (GO) addition to epoxy can improve various properties provided that the GO features, dispersion and interaction with epoxy are optimized. Herein, the challenge of improving the hydrophobicity, flexural behavior and wear resistance of an epoxy coating on steel substrate was addressed by GO incorporation. Three GO concentrations were tested in the epoxy system (0.1, 0.25, and 0.50% m/m), and nanocomposites were prepared via roller mill. An increase in the thermal stability of the pure epoxy by 23°C was observed for the nanocomposites as a function of GO incorporation. XPS analyses were carried out to study the interaction between DGEBA and GO, and the results show that a covalent link was formed between GO and epoxy. The wettability test showed an increase of 26° in the contact angle while the behavior of the system from mechanical bending tests showed gains of 52% in the energy to fracture for the sample containing 0.5 wt.% GO with respect to the neat epoxy. The wear of the coatings showed a 31% decrease in the wear coefficient of the nanocomposite compared to the reference. The set of results reported in the present work pointed to the epoxy/GO coating as promising in terms of hydrophobicity and wear properties. Note de contenu : - Chemicals and reagents
