The major advantage with fish oils is that they contain significant amount of pentadienoic fatty acid in addition to higher iodine value. But the main problem with fish oil is its strong odor and high cost. The objective of the present work is to study the suitability of oils such as linseed oil, castor oil, sunflower oil, animal tallow for chamois leather manufacture in comparision with fish oil. The chamois leather, thus obtained was tested for properties such as sink test, water absorption and strength characteristics. Experimental results show that among different oils, linseed oil based chamois leather posseses higher water absorption and strength properties. It also has mild odour. This study shows that acceptable quality chamois leather can be made using linseed oil as tanning agent instead of fish oil. Produits de nourriture du cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : GLC represents a technique for recognising sperm oil and even its semi-quantitative determination by the use of an integrator. However, the technique must be used with care and intelligence. It is important to ensure that there is first of an a reasonably clear response. For reasons which are not absolutely clear, response to injection of the required amount of sample can be poor on occasions. Amplification of the signal can be used though this rules out any possibility of a quantitative evaluation. A low response considerably reduces the detection limt of sperm oil which is 5 % of the total extract but can be improved under good conditions and be worse if these conditions depart in the other direction. Considerable work on examination of leathers and mixed fatliquors confirms that sperm oil can be recognised at this level.
Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The use of silicones in automotive applications opens great opportunities. However, there are also certain risks, especially in e-mobility applications, so that in the supplier industry there is sometimes the myth of a silicone ban present. As part of a bilateral project, Audi and Fraunhofer IFAM have now investigated the outgassing behaviour of silicone-containing materials in the environment of mechatronic and electronic components in more detail. Whereas many other materials should preferably be odorless, a typical leather odor is desired. It is an important quality feature. So far the compounds causing the leather odor could not be clearly defined. For this research work, different leathers from different application areas were chosen. Depending on the manufacturing technology the leathers showed different nuances of leather odor. Published herein are the results from analysis of leathers by Gaschromatography-Odorimetry (GC-O), Aroma-extract-dilution analysis (AEDA), Gas chromatography-Mass-Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Stable-Isotope-Dilution-Analysis (SIDA) for identifying and quantifying substances accountable for certain leather odors. Furthermore, it points out from which stages of leather manufacturing the leather odor originates and if it can be influenced. Alternative methods for identification and quantification of substances relevant to odor are discussed regarding their significance. Note de contenu : EXPERIMENTAL :

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather tanned with different agents was pyrolyzed in the presence of CoC12 and MnC12 catalysts. A bovine leather sample tanned with two inorganic tanning agents (chromium and titanium salts) and two organic tanning agents (glutaraldehyde and methylacrylic resin) has been used in this study. The samples were soaked in solutions of CoC12 or MnC12 of known concentration. The influence on decomposition temperature and the resultant pyrolysis compounds has been evaluated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG) and flash pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS). A multivariate analysis has been applied to the pyrolysis products obtained confirming the effect of the catalyst treatment on leather, specifically on samples tanned with organic agents. According to the results, CoC12 (higher Lewis acidity) shows a greater influence than the MnC12 (lower Lewis acidity). The results indicate that the presence of chlorides affects the nature of the pyrolysis products, increasing the yield of the aromatic compounds in ail the samples, thus improving the added-value of the volatiles. These catalysts reduced slightly the decomposition temperature.
