Corrosion and protection of bridges (Part 2) / P. K. Kamani in PAINTINDIA, Vol. LXV, N° 3 (03/2015)
[article]

There have been lots of development in every sphere of painting system : surface preparation, primer to top coat, pain application equipments, etc. Environment, painting cost and performance of die coatings are the basic reasons behind the development of newer technology. New paint systems have been developed to meet low VOC requirement and facilitate painting comprise fewer layers compared to old paint systems having several layer of paints with high VOC. Present paint systems for bridges enable vert' long repair intervals. Painting conditions in workshops have improved considerably in the fast few years, and the risk of moisture condensing on the surface of steel before painting has been eliminated completely.

Spectroscopie RamanIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the maritime industry, stainless steel corrosion resistance requires further surface improvement and further enhanced protection using surface coatings. In this study, an engineered copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-blended coating was found to provide outstanding corrosion resistance for metal surfaces affording protection against severely corrosive marine environments. Electrochemical measurements indicate that corrosion protection of 316 stainless steel was drastically increased when utilizing the KP blend (a combination of PVDF + PMMA), producing a new set of corrosion properties and morphological characteristics. The corrosion protection of the KP coating proved to be very effective in reducing the passive region current density from 2.19 × 10−5 A/cm2 (for bare stainless steel) to 2.63 × 10−10 A/cm2 and the breakdown passive region potential at 0.25 V. This was followed by a significant decrease in corrosion rate, when compared to pure PMMA and PVDF films, during exposure to artificial marine seawater. With the KP film, impedance measurements surpassed those of other films, with a noticeable nonpeak straight line in the phase angle diagram. Optical observation showed that corrosion pits and delamination areas existed under the coatings.

Artificial blisters were generated by potentiostatic DC polarization of an epoxy-coated aluminum substrate and characterized using optical microscopy, electron microscopy (SEM), scanning electrochemical microscopy, as well as by scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) measurement. Impedance measured above blisters displayed high values, typical of an intact undamaged coating. SKP measurement above the blister identified regions of likely corrosion beneath it, which was verified by SEM. SEM images showed pitting-like corrosion beneath the blisters, implying that high impedance measured on delaminated coatings may correspond to the delaminated polymeric film. SKP was also able to identify regions of invisible delamination. Note de contenu : - Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : One of the first commercial ion-exchange anticorrosive pigments to be developed was Shieldex® (Si/Ca). Its proposed corrosion protection mechanism, based on the retention of aggressive cations and the subsequent release of calcium cations, has created certain controversy. A number of studies have focused on the anticorrosive behavior of this pigment on carbon steel and galvanized steel to replace chromates (Cr6+) as inhibitor pigment, but none has considered its performance on aluminum or aluminum alloys. In this research, alkyd coatings have been formulated with Si/Ca pigment at different concentrations and applied on aluminum 1050 (Al 99.5%) specimens. These specimens have then been subjected to accelerated tests (condensing humidity, salt spray, and Kesternich) and natural weathering in atmospheres of different aggressivity. Corrosion performance has been also evaluated in the laboratory by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The study has also considered an organic coating with zinc chromate anticorrosive pigment for comparative purposes. The results obtained with organic coatings formulated with Si/Ca pigments confirm that they provide corrosion protection of the underlying aluminum substrate, even improving the behavior of the reference zinc chromate in some environmental conditions. Oxyde de graphèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the modern metal finishing industry, corrosion protection plays a critical role, with many coatings created to prevent this phenomenon (corrosion) and protect the metals. Nano-coating has of late been used to develop corrosion-resistant metal composites. Recently, layers of graphene-based materials with extraordinary properties have been successfully manufactured and applied through electrophoretic deposition (EPD). This article summarizes work altering the graphene oxide (GO) content, which was prepared using an adapted Hummers' method and then the simultaneous reduction of the GO suspension by the EPD method into graphene nano-coating on carbon steel. Different parameters were optimized, namely applied voltage, deposition time, and GO concentration. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the coatings. The corrosion resistance of these coatings was measured by electrochemical polarization in aqueous solutions under accelerated corrosion conditions. The results show not only that EPD is a simple technique that allows creating a graphene coat on carbon steel from GO suspension, but also that it forms a graphene nano-coating which provides significant protection against corrosion of steel in acidic and salty solutions.
