The obtained results conflrmed that the emulsion type is strongly influenced by the solid particles' wettability which is controlled by the hydrophilic/hydrophobic precursor's ratio. Also, it was shown that the prepared emulsions present a long-term stability for different ranges of oils, either mineral or vegetal, with specific sensory properties due to the 'solid' interface.
On the practical aspect, the controversial precursors, such as aluminium salts and PEG derivatives, are currently replaced to further meet cosmetics consumers' expectations.
Moreover, other innovative applications will also emerge. As an example, the antimicrobial activity of aminopropyl-silicates has recently been investigated.Note de contenu : - Starting materials

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper reviews the recent research and development of polymeric nanocomposite coatings based on layered silicates. In the past few decades, extensive research activities have been conducted on clay minerals due to their unique layered structure, rich intercalation chemistry and availability at low cost, environmental stability, and good processability. One of the most important categories of layered silicates is nanoclays. The nanoclay is considered as reinforcement for polymers in the manufacture of low-cost, lightweight and high performance nanocomposite coatings. In this paper, we try to introduce the structure, properties, and surface modification of clay minerals. Different properties of polymer clay nanocomposite coatings consisting of different polymers are also reviewed. These coatings may consist of conductive and nonconductive polymers. The corrosion resistance of each type is discussed separately. Some novel properties can be observed from the interaction of two dissimilar chemical components at the molecular level that posses enhancements in corrosion inhibition on metallic substrates. Finally, the prospective problems of industrial usage of these materials are mentioned.
Index. décimale : 541.34 Solutions Note de contenu : I. The silica-water system

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films were prepared by cast extrusion using a twin-screw extruder with a severe screw profile. The effect of an organically modified montmorillonite on thermal, mechanical, optical, and barrier properties of the PET films were investigated. Morphological characterization of the nanocomposite films was performed by employing wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) followed by image analysis. The results unfold a mixed morphology for the nanocomposite films with more than 95% exfoliated and intercalated silicate layer structures, depending on the screw rotation speed. The remarkable dispersion of the organoclay particles at the nano-level is discussed in terms of solubility parameter and favorable interactions between PET macromolecules and organic modifier of the nanoclay. The crystal content of the nanocomposite films and their cold and hot crystallization temperatures confirmed the role of silicate nanolayers as a heterogeneous nucleating agent. While all nanocomposite films exhibit higher haze values in comparison to the neat PET samples, incorporation of 2 wt% nanoclay brought about 25% increase in tensile modulus and barrier properties. A range of screw rotation speeds with optimized properties in terms of haze, morphology, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties is suggested. Note de contenu : - Materials
