Clinically, these effects may be classified as acute, such as erythema or chronic such as keratinocyte and melanocyte skin cancers. Apart from skin type genetics, clinical responses to solar UVR are dependent on geophysical (e.g., solar intensity) and behavioural factors. The latter are especially important because they may result in ‘solar overload’ with unwanted clinical consequences and ever greater burdens to healthcare systems. Correctly used, sunscreens can mitigate the acute and chronic effects of solar UVR exposure. Laboratory studies also show that sunscreens can inhibit the initial molecular and cellular events that are responsible for clinical outcomes. Despite public health campaigns, global trends continue to show increasing incidence of all types of skin cancer. Large-scale epidemiological studies have shown the benefits of sunscreen use in preventing skin cancer, though it is likely that sunscreen use has not been optimal in such studies. It is evident that without substantial changes in sun-seeking behaviour, sunscreen use is a very important part of the defence against the acute and chronic effects of solar exposure. Ideally, sunscreens should be able to provide the level of protection that reduces the risk of skin cancer in susceptible skin types to that observed in heavily melanized skin. Rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Meta-analyses of observational case-control studies have demonstrated no protective benefit of sunscreens and the development of malignant melanoma. Given the period during which the case-control studies were conducted, the sunscreens prevalent at that time, and how suncreen is used and applied in practice, it is not surprising that these studies failed to find any association between their use and the risk of melanoma. Modern high SPF, broad spectrum sunscreens, on the other hand, can be expected to be an effective measure in helping to prevent melanoma compared with sunscreens typical of those used 10 to 20 years ago. It is reasonable to suppose that the improvement in performance of modern sunscreens will lead to a worthwhile benefit as a preventative agent against melanoma, although these benefits may not be seen for several decades.
AND METHODS : Sunscreen products - Substrates - Product application - Transmittance measurement - Calculation of the in vitro SPF - Statistical evaluation

Facteur de protection solaireIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - The SPF number is more than 25 years old and International methods used to measure it are now very similar.
- There are still some differences in test methods that may lead to SPF variability if not properly taken into account.
- In Europe the COLIPA SPF Test method should always be the method of choice as it remains the most strictly defined method.
- There are several pieces of national and European legislation which sunscreen manufacturers must comply with, some of which are very vague in their requirements.
- With adequate care and reasonable scientific and technical knowledge, we should all be able to label SPF numbers with confidence.Note de contenu : - A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPF TESTING
