Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surfaces that simply protect and/or beautify will no longer meet the expectations of the end user in the near future. Today's customers-from individual consumers to industrial users-demand enhanced functionality, from antimicrobial capability to self-cleaning and self-healing properties. Leaders in the coatings market are beginning to appreciate that unique functionality can be used to ensure not only continued, but highly profitable, growth of the industry. To provide these features cost effectively, they have sought assistance from resin and additive suppliers.
Use of bioengineered additives in particular has been demonstrated to ba en effective means for incorporating such unique functionality into paint formulations. The fact that bio-based ingredients are naturally derived, environmentally friendly materials with non-persistent, non-accumulating, and non-toxic profiles makes them a very attractive solution. Recently, it has been demonstrated that enzymes can also be incorporated into laminates, dramatically expanding the opportunities for creating uniquely functionalized surfaces.Note de contenu : - Bioactive additives deliver novel functionality

Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The wettability of metal surfaces is of importance in different practical applications. In the present work, we investigated the role of alumina coatings in the variation of the surface wettability of aluminum alloys by nanosecond laser ablation. The superhydrophilic surface (water contact angle close to 0°) was successfully prepared, and the superhydrophilic surface was transformed into the superhydrophobic surface (water contact angle of about 151.4°) after non-fluorinated N-octyltriethoxysilane (OcTES) treatment. XPS results showed that the Al–OH (–OH) hydrophilic groups generated by coating decomposition occupied the main regions on the surface after laser ablation. After OcTES treatment, the OcTES molecules formed Si–O–Al bonds with the rough surface, which significantly increased the C–C(H) hydrophobic groups of the surface. The superhydrophobic surface showed good self-cleaning, anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties. The fabrication method is fast, non-toxic and environmentally friendly, which makes it potentially useful for engineering applications. Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water repellent SiO2 particulate coatings were prepared by a one-step introduction of vinyl groups on the coating surface. Rough surface structure and low surface energy could be directly obtained. Vinyl functionalized SiO2 (vinyl-SiO2) spheres with average diameter of 500 nm were first synthesized by a sol–gel method in aqueous solution using vinyltriethoxysilane as the precursor. The multilayer SiO2 coating fabricated by dip-coating method was highly hydrophobic with a water contact angle of 145.7° ± 2.3°. The superhydrophobic SiO2 coating with a water contact angle up to 158° ± 1.7° was prepared by spraying an alcohol mixture suspension of the vinyl-SiO2 spheres on the glass substrate. In addition, the superhydrophobic SiO2 coating demonstrated good stability under the acidic condition. However, it lost its hydrophobicity above 200°C because of the oxidation and degradation of vinyl groups. Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The microbial infection as a result of biofilm formation is a serious problem in various fields of application in the paper industry including fouling of filters in air conditioning systems, wallpaper, medical and food packaging as well as ancient documents. In this study, we document a highly nonfouling surface coating formed by a functional copolymer consisting of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, as a zwitterionic and cell repellent component, and 4-benzophenyl methacrylate, acting as an anchor group for a fast UV-induced persistent covalent attachment on thin cellulose model films deposited on silicon wafers. The grafting process, studied by UV–Vis spectroscopy, is much faster in comparison with common grafting-to techniques. The obtained sustainable and nonleaching surface coatings were analyzed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, spectroscopic in situ ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy. Incubation of the modified cellulose surfaces with either Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis or Saccharomyces cerevisiae demonstrates that the zwitterionic polymer functionalization has substantial nonfouling capacity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as the yeast fungus.
