The emulsion polymerisation method and other chemical agents were maintained constant. Upper leathers were impregnated with these resins following a statistical design which included non-impregnated leathers as controls. Leather break and stiffness were assessed before and after the impregnating process. The elasticity modulus at 2% extension was measured for ail leathers and also in their respective grain and flesh layers after splitting. From the results obtained several concrete facts emerged. First, the leather break and stiffness increased in the following resins order: butyl acrylate < ethyl acrylate= methyl methacrylate < methyl acrylate. Relationships of the grain layer elasticity modulus to the flesh layer one for the impregnated leathers (Mi grain/Mi flesh) and for the control leathers (Mc grain/Mc flesh) were calculated. It was found that an increase in the difference between these two relationships correlated very well with the increase found in the leather break. On the other hand, when the leathers were impregnated with film forming polymers, their elasticity modulus increased proportionally to the polymer hardness increase. VulcanisationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are finding increasing use, as both manufacturers and processors come under constant pressure to innovate. A major disadvantage of TPE as compared with conventional vulcanizates is their tension set, which it has now been possible to minimize by post-crosslinking of the elastomer phase. This opens up opportunities for processors to develop further applications for commercially available TPE. Note de contenu : - Crosslinking methods

Textiles et tissus -- LavageIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : This research study focuses on the application of conductive ink by the screen printing technique to evaluate the potential of creating printed electrodes and to investigate the effect of washing upon electrical resistance and flexibility. Two conductive inks were applied by a conventional screen printing method on four different textile substrates, 100% cotton, 50%/50% cotton/polyester, 100% polyester and 100% polyamide. The inks were also applied on a multifibre fabric. Atmospheric plasma treatment was applied to improve the adhesion to the samples, and the resistance values were compared with those of non‐treated samples. The values were measured before and after cleaning and washing tests, which were performed to simulate domestic treatment for garments to predict the behaviour of the inks after normal usage of the fabrics. Comfort properties like stiffness of the fabrics were also evaluated after five and 10 washing cycles. It was observed that PE 825 ink forms a thicker film on the fabric surface, contributing to the loss of flexibility of the textile. However, PE 825 ink also produced the best results in terms of durability and lower values of resistance. Polyamide fabrics lost their conductive property after five washing cycles due to weak bonding between the ink and the fibres, whereas cotton fibres provided the best results.

Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Chrome tanned bovine leather has been dried under uniaxial strain and its relative bending modulus has been determined as a function of the amount of strain applied during drying and of the angle h between the test piece and the applied strain axis (long axis of sample). The orientation distribution of collagen fibres in the leather was also examined using wide angle X-ray diffraction at the Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury. It was found that the bending modulus showed a marked dependence on both the amounts of applied strain and the angle h. This dependence could be understood in terms of the changes in fibre orientation caused by the action of the strain applied during drying.
