Nickel

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst was modified with nickel (Ni) and nitrogen (N) in titanium tetra-isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor through a microwave-assisted method. The Ni and N dopants led to a decrease in the TiO2 band gap and made it able to function with visible light irradiation. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the crystalline size of Ni–N–TiO2 was 13.275 nm in anatase form with a specific peak in 2θ = 25.32°. Ni–N–TiO2 was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, which showed the smaller morphology and thin particles, and this was further supported by energy-dispersive X-ray data regarding the elemental composition of Ni and N being 4.50 and 2.39%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated the absorption spectrum in wavenumbers of 1197 and 1149 cm−1, indicating an N–TiO2 bond, a Ti–O bond at 648 cm−1, and an Ni–O bond at 469 cm−1. TiO2 modified by Ni and N exhibited a decrease in the band gap at 1.95 eV, suggesting the Ni and N dopants successfully inserted onto the TiO2 crystalline surface to be visualized with visible light. Photoactivity testing was carried out to degrade sodium lauryl sulfate surfactants under visible irradiation, where the degradation efficiency was 93.75%. The electrodeposition was done at ambient electrolyte temperature with mild agitation and under current density ranging from 10 to 50 mA/cm2. X-ray diffraction analysis (2θ for first three peaks = 44.6, 51.9, and 76.8) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer verified the presence of a pure nickel coating. Under field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis, the coating shows a typical nodular surface morphology, while cross-sectional microstructures show a compact nickel layer. Vickers hardness testing shows that the coating hardness gave the highest value of 293 HV at 30 mA/cm2 current density. Arsenic

Substances dangereusesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coatings have been used since time immemorial for decorative and protective purposes. During the initial periods, when not much information was available regarding the health impact of the raw materials, there was no thought given or restrictions put on use of any ingredients in coatings. Some of the raw materials like white lead (lead carbonate), red lead (lead oxide), hexavalent chromium compounds, and other similar compounds were being used in large quantities to get specific paint film properties. This not only affected human health but also with no effective effluent treatment contaminated soil and water resources. With progress in technology and diagnostics, lead and chromium compounds have been identified as carcinogens. The developed countries (Europe and USA) were the first to ban the use of lead in their products in the 1970s and 1980s, but due to mainly economic reasons, these are still being used in the developing countries. As the long-term health impact is too much to bear, regulations/legislations have been enacted by the governments restricting use of lead/chrome in paints. The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (GAELP), a joint association formed under the United Nations Environment programme, and World Health Organization have agreed to phase out manufacture and sale of paints containing lead by 2020. Similar restrictions exist for many other compounds used in coatings. The article attempts to present a synopsis of the history of coatings composition, impact of the heavy metals on health and environment, and the options available for shifting to safer coating composition. As major focus of the world is on lead elimination, it has been covered in more detail, but the article also provides information on other metals, namely cadmium, chromium, mercury, arsenic, antimony, tin, nickel, manganese, cobalt, etc., and their current status. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study focuses on the effect of co-deposition of PTFE and/or MoS2 particles on the morphology, wear, and corrosion properties of electroless nickel coating. The composite coating of EN–PTFE–MoS2 was heat treated at different temperatures for hardness investigations. The surface morphology of coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Pin-on-disk and potentiodynamic polarization tests were used to study the tribological and corrosion properties of the coatings, respectively. Results of hardness analysis revealed that the hardness of electroless nickel coatings was increased by the heat treatment, and its maximum was gained at 400°C. Wear investigations showed that simultaneous co-deposition of the PTFE and MoS2 particles into the nickel coating increased the wear resistance of the coating by about 30% and reduced the average value of friction coefficient to 0.25 from 0.65. Corrosion studies illustrated that simultaneous co-deposition of the PTFE and MoS2 particles led to reduction in corrosion resistance by 10 and 5 times that of EN coating in brine and acidic solution, respectively.
