Titre : Performance of finishes on wood that is chemically modified by acetylation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : E. P. J. Beckers, Auteur ; Mari de Meijer, Auteur ; H. Militz, Auteur ; M. Stevens, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 59-67 Note générale : Bibliogr.

VieillissementIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Swelling and shrinkage of wood has a major effect on the performance of coatings applied to its surface. Altering the molecular structure of wood by a reaction with acetic anhydride is known to improve the dimensional stability of wood considerably. Such acetylation ofwood was shown to have no effect on the drying characteristics and adhesion of applied coatings. Weathering performance of coatings was improved considerably. A color stabilizing effect was achieved with acetylated Scots pine with and without a clearcoating.

VieillissementIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyesters were formulated into melamine baking enamels and evaluated by QUV-B, QUV-A, Xenon arc, Emmaqua® NTW, and Florida exposures in order to determine the effect of polyester composition on outdoor durability. Specifically, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol was compared to propylene glycol and neopentyl glycol in several compositions that utilized adipic acid, isophthalic acid, and phthalic anhydride as the diacid constituents. Unexpected positive results for polyesters based upon 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol led to a detailed analysis of polyester decomposition mechanisms and raised questions concerning the true significance of beta-hydrogen degradation pathways. Semiempirical frontier molecular orbital calculations demonstrated that the beta-hydrogen of diols and diol esters are less susceptible to oxidative attack than the alpha hydrogens. The molecular orbital calculations fit well with experimental evidence and provided a deeper understanding of the effect that the components of polyesters have upon the exterior durability of the coating. VieillissementIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The paint and coatings industry has traditionally been at the leading edge of weathering testing. For example, photos exist of a 1907 weathering test fence at North Dakota State University, built to determine the long-term effects of sunlight and weather conditions on paints. These photos show that many of the standard techniques in use today at Q-Lab's outdoor exposure sites in Florida and Arizona have their roots in these early weathering tests.
