Tannage Résumé : Fleshing hydrolysate (FH) was prepared from limed fleshings by an alkali digestion method. The FH that was obtained was in the molecular weight range of 15,000 daltons. It was used as a chrome exhaustion aid in chrome tanning and rechroming processes. Various studies on treated cow sides such as percent exhaustion of chromium, shrinkage temperature, strength properties, and scanning electron micrograph studies were carried out in comparison with control samples. The results showed that chromium uptake of the leather was increased by 10 - 20% in the sides treated with FH and the physical properties were comparable to the control samples. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : In line with the resurgence of natural product dominance in the global manufacturing industry, leather industry is also re-looking at the possibility of increased use of organic materials. With a view to exploit the benefits of the vegetable tanning materials and to overcome the inherent shortcomings of vegetable tanning materials by suitable coupling with organic auxiliaries, studies were undertaken. Tanning materials based on acrylics have advantageous properties such as preferential filling of voids, good fastness properties and compatibility with other tanning materials and auxiliaries. Based on the hydrothermal stability, uptake of tannins, physical strength properties and assessment of crust leathers, one commercial acrylic retanning material was chosen for the combination tannage with vegetable. The acrylic treatment followed by vegetable tanning produced better results in terms of hydrothermal stability and uptake of the tannins. The concentration of the acrylic was also optimised. The study indicated that pretreatment of pelts with acrylic in 1:10 ratio with vegetable tanning material enhances the hydrothermal stability by 10±2o C compared to conventional vegetable tanning system and produced finished leathers comparable to that of conventional tanning systems.
