solvantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The tanning industry uses some pollutant chemicals, which are hazardous and toxic. This paper proposes a modest research contribution to examine how to reduce or replace some of these products by less dangerous and less polluting chemicals in the finishing operations. This work also examines how to reduce solvents in the finishing formulations currently being used in the production of a leather article. Specifically, a study of each coal has been carried out to find out how to replace the most polluting products and still obtain all the adequate physical and organoleptic features in the final article to be manufactured.
Leather manufactured applying the new process has been compared to leather obtained by means of the traditional process. The findings reveal that the new formulation complies with all requirements concerning physical resistance, fastness, and organoleptic properties. The decrease in volatile organic compounds obtained with the new formulation has also been studied.Note de contenu : - TABLES : 1. Fastness requirements - 2. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In response to the current needs of the leather market, competing manufacturers have to be flexible, adaptable and quick at producing leather goods that are both technologically innovative and fashionable. A new coating formulation has been studied in order to obtain an article which meets these two characteristics. The present study aims to obtain a patent leather finish with a pull-up effect. In addition, it aims to make improvements in the process by replacing the usual solvent based patent top with an aqueous patent topcoat. As a result, the article obtained in industrial scale complies with the European Union Council Directive 1999/13/EC of 11 march 1999 (on the limitation of emissions of volatile organic compounds due to the use of organic solvents in certain activities and installations).
The finished leathers obtained with this new coating formulation are transparent, smooth, with a glossy look (almost glass-like) and with an accentuated pull-up effect. Tannage Résumé : The process of pickle-tanning results in the significant pollution of wastewaters through the presence of chrome and chlorides. A new process has been studied in order to reduce the negative environmental effect that pickle-tanning causes on leather making. The new process involves a pickle without float and with minimum salt offer as well as the substitution of the inorganic acid by a sulphoaromatic acid. By doing so, the required additions of chrome salt and salt are minimized and this results in high levels of chromium exhaustion in the residual float. When this process is compared to the traditional one, the results obtained indicate that there is a 78 percent reduction in residual float volume, a 93 percent reduction in chlorides content in the effluent and a 95 percent reduction in chrome content in the float. Tannage Résumé : The traditional chrome-tanning process poses several disadvantages from the environmental point of view including effluent volume as well as chromium and chloride content. We have thus modified the process in order to minimize these disadvantages. The tanning process has been carried out with almost no float by simply utilizing the float already contained in the hide. As there is very little water, the quantity of sodium chloride required to avoid the swelling of the skin decreases sharply, due to the acidic conditions. In a corresponding manner, the mechanical work on the skin increases and the fixation of chrome salt is greater. Water consumption and chrome discharge are dramatically lower using the new system instead of the traditional system. A comparison of results shows that by using the new system water consumption decreases by 78 percent, chrome oxide content by 86 percent and chlorides present in the effluents by 94 percent. Nowadays, four type of cross-linkers for leather finishing are available : polyaziridines, polyizocyanates, polycarbodiimides and epoxy compounds. The aim of this study is to compare the mechanism of reaction of these four types of cross-linkers and the possibility of using a polysilane as a cross-linking agent for butadienes. A comparison of results shows that all cross-linkers studied improve wet rub fastness. However, polyaziridine and polysilane emerge as the most effective cross-linkers for butadiene binders.
