UF resins were synthesised under acid and base catalyzed condition at different pH which is the most controlling factor for reaction between urea and formaldehyde as welI as the extent of unreacted formaldehyde of the final resin. The unreacted formaldehyde i.e. free formaldehyde of the resins after synthesis has been measured. The functional groups of the final resins and the probable reaction techniques were characterised using FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy along with other physical properties. The effect of reaction conditions on molecular weight and its distribution were studied using gel permeation chromatography. These results are further supported after curing the resins with alkyd and correlated with cured film properties like hardness, gloss, impact resistance, hydrolytic stability etc.
Based on these experiments it can be concluded that the extent of formaldehyde emission from a UF resin can be predicted by knowing the actual reaction conditions i.e. pH during reaction, type of reaction etc. Such type of correlation is an important guideline for lowering of formaldehyde emission in any UF resin.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL

Titre : Role of imino functionality in melamine formaldehyde resin and designing its optimum proportion by multi-variate statistical analysis Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Somnath Ray, Auteur ; Jayanta Pal, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p. 77-100 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : It is a very common practice that to get the desired property we often depend on huge number of trials at a time. But this will not only cost money/resources as well as time also. A better design strategy should be to minimise number of trials, efforts and randomise the trials. We can statistically extrapolate available data to the desired region and then go for a valid run. The work described in this paper has been done with this objective in mind . Three imino type melamine formaldehyde and one highly butylated melamine formaldehyde resin were synthesised under different processing condition, and using different levels of pH & melamine, formaldehyde & butanol ratios. Relative structural characteristics of these resins were determined using proton- Fourier Transfer Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Molecular weight and its distribution were studied using gel permeation chromatography. Polyester Melamine White Enamel Paints were prepared using these Melamine Resins and their rheological properties, short term, and long term properties were checked by non-destructive methods as well as conventional methods. Based on these experimental data, authors of this paper made efforts to correlate the attributes & variables statistically and determine the optimum proportion of imino functionality required to get desired property by simple and multi-variable regression analysis and other statistical tools. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Over the past few decades, high solid resins have gained wide spread acceptance in the surface coating industries, as these are used successfully in high solid coating for improved performances and meeting volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations. In this paper, different techniques of preparation for high solid alkyds, acrylics, polyesters and polyurethanes have been discussed. The role of hydrogen bond acceptor solvents, and reactive diluents in the preparation of alkyd and polyester resins are mentioned here. The effect of molecular weight distribution, polydispersity and functionality of the polyols and polybasic acids have been discussed for these resins. The effect of different synthesis conditions and formulation parameters has been discussed in the preparation ofthermosetting acrylic resins. The use of star oligomers based on trimethylol propane, oligopropylenediol and oxazolidine has been discussed in preparation of polyurethane resins having high non volatile contents.
