Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The realisation that petroleum reserves are finite, thereby casting doubts on the future availability of petroleum products as industrial raw materials, has rekindled interest on renewable resources like Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). CNSL, which is obtained from the shells as a by-product of the cashew nut industry, is one of the few major and economic sources of naturally occurring phenols. The presence of considerable amount of phenolic compound in CNSL makes it an important low cost and widely versatile alternative raw material in several applications, notable in the manufacture of paints and varnishes, production of friction dust for formulating brake linings and clutch facing lamination, production of foundry core oil, rubber compounding and for protecting wood etc. This paper covers the extraction, chemical composition, polymerisation, properties and industrial applications of CNSL and its products. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Because of the growing global interest in the renewable resources as alternative to petroleum products, rice bran oil which is a by-product of a major crop in various countries, is becoming a popular raw material in the synthesis of oil based resins. Association of sufficient reactive sites with the fatty acids in the oil are responsible for significant improvement in the properties such as adhesion, flexibility, skinning tendency, chemical resistance, etc. The oil is already in use in various areas such as soaps, detergents, cosmetics, textiles, rubber, surface coatings, etc. However, the modification can still open many possibility of its applications. Paint also contains several chemicals in minor quantity (known as additives) which can influence the properties of coating in broad spectrum. Surfactant like wetting and dispersing agent is a special type of additive used in very low amourn (<2%) but hasthe power to change the performance of coating many fold. ln this article the effect of surfactant (additive) on corrosion performance of coating has been discussed. Titre : Synthesis and characterization of multifarious oil/alkyd-acrylic hybrid for architectural and industrial coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : P. K. Kamani, Auteur ; Manish Bajpayee, Auteur Année de publication : 2006 Article en page(s) : p. 71-94 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The hybrids, oil/alkyd-acrylic, were synthesized by polymerizing different acrylic monomers in the presence of colloidal oil/alkyd droplets. The presence of oil/alkyd caused retardation in the polymerization through radical delocalization following radical transfer to the unsaturated groups of the fatty acids in the oil/alkyd but the adjustment of reaction condition could give 100% conversion. The homogeneity of the hybrids differed from blends as was observed in good film formation without the use of cosolvents. In some cases a true synergistic behaviour was observed. The mechanism of interaction of resin in the hybrid is discussed. The main objective of this research is to develop a resin system with common characteristics of two or more (if any) resins. The hybrids thus developed have significant improved performance over the blends and the individual system. The application properties of hybrids could be varied over a broad range by changing either the acrylic part or the alkyd part or their ratio. The hybrids were applied on various substrates and their performance were studied. Significant improvement in adhesion, on various substrates gloss and gloss retention, hardness, dirt rebar found. This paper will describe the design, synthesis, characterization and coating performance of the hybrids. Note de contenu : - Acrylics

This important metal is converted to another important material called iron oxide (yellow, red or black). This conversion, if not carried out, can create environmental hazards. There are various methods of conversion. The commercial locally available pickled liquoir is converted into yellow and red oxide of iron with satisfactory pigmentary properties.
