Unlike standard architectural paints, new photocatalytic paints actively reduce the adherence on dirt on surfaces. This enables coatings to remain cleaner in heavily polluted areas. Additional effects of the photocatalytic activity are possible reduction of air pollution and anti-microbial activity. Photocatalytic paints require new methods of formulation. Modern binders optimized for use in standard architectural paints fail in photocatalytic applications because the organic matrix is decomposed by the photoactive action of the titanium dioxide. The combination of photoactive titanium dioxide with the right binder plays a key role in the performance of photocatalytic paints. New results in the formulation of photocatalytic paints for interior and exterior applications show the effects of the titanium dioxide and the binder on self-cleaning and on the long-term performance of paits. Special emphasis has been given to the evaluation of parameters for manufacturing paints in order to increase the efficiency of the titanium dioxide as a photocatalyst. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : The European VOC directive will dramatically change the coatings market over the next two years. Solventborne alkyd resins as know today will largely disappear. The challenge for the resin producer and paint formulator is to develop alkyd based coatings with minimal solvent levels. With selected and properly formulated surfactants, water can be incorporated in solventborne alkyd based coatings as a dispersed phase to partially replace hydrocarbons. The use of "non-migratory surfactants' as external emulsion stabilisers allows development of low VOC alkyd based coatings with excellent shelf life and film quality.
